The Canteen is a full-service neighbourhood restaurant in Downtown Dartmouth, serving up chef-inspired seasonal fare for lunch, brunch and dinner. At the helm in the kitchen is award-winning chef and co-owner Renee Lavallee. Her seasonal menus are influenced by classic French, Italian and traditional Nova Scotian cuisine – with a little bit of Renée’s magic thrown in. Signature items include The Canteen Burger, The Crobster Roll, Seafood Chowder and more.

    Managed to get a last Minute reservation which is often difficult but obviously good for the restaurant. Server was great as was the food. I’ve had the chowder there a number of times and never disappoints.

    The staff were incredibly kind and helpful. I had the crosser roll and I loved it. It was so nice having the dill in it, it make it different! I had a dark lemonade cocktail and it was really good too! A bit sour, but I enjoy that and expected it since it was lemonade!

    Every time we go it is better than the last. Our server this time held amazing conversations with us and the tables around us. Found a way to connect with everyone and was extremely helpful and knowledgeable of the seasonal menu. I wish I remembered her name, she went to Acadia haha! Michael is always a pleasure to see as well, my parents always request him as he is so wonderful! The food was outstanding as usual and I can’t wait to make another trip back! Love love love this place, keep up the outstanding service!

    Excellent fresh local food with unexpected combinations and local wines and beers. Service team was friendly, warm, and knowledgeable — we very much appreciated being able to get a 9:45 pm table after a long drive. We loved the pea and scallop risotto and the halibut was bursting with flavors. Get the carrot cake for dessert!! Generous portions.

    Friendly staff and quick service. The food was delicious and the staff followed up on my note that I had provided when booking.

    The Canteen is the BEST restaurant in HRM!!! The Crobster Roll is a MUST try, with the very fresh hand cut fries. Everything is absolutely authentic, including the staff!! We sat at the bar and were served by Ansell, with Mark engaging in lots of conversation. When we mentioned we were kicking off a week of vacation, Mark treated us to a complimentary glass of Prosecco...unheard of anywhere else!!! We recommend The Canteen whenever we have out of town visitors, or anyone who asks, "where is the best place to eat?". Thank you Doug, Renee and team for doing what you do. You feel the amazing ambience the minute you walk in the door.

    Brought my aunt and uncle here from out of town. Made a last minute reservation online and happy to have a quick space for 6 to have lunch. Incredible food. Great service! Couldn’t ask for a better spot !
