Heirloom is a full-service restaurant that is located in the historic Athenaeum Hotel on the grounds of Chautauqua Institution. From June 22nd - August 24th we offer breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. On Sundays we have a wonderful brunch buffet and offer a buffet dinner only.

Starting May 1st a lounge menu is available 11am - 9pm daily. Reservations are not required for prior to June 22nd.

Service was very good. The food was well prepared, but my salmon portion was on the small side. My wife had the fried tofu bowl and ended up adding a side of broccolini as she found that dish lacking in vegetables. She also thought the tofu serving was small.The trout is still our favorite thing on the menu and has been a reliable go-to.

My experience at the Heirloom was very disappointing. I sat for 35 minutes and finally had to stop a wait person to ask for help. It was another 10 minutes before a management person came and assigned a person to take my order. The person that came was very helpful and saved the day. I ordered Rhode Island Calamari and a house salad and a glass of wine. The calamari and salad came at the same time but not the wine. The calamari was a poor example of the dish, small over fried calamari, battered hot red peppers and jalapeño. The peppers should have been unbattered yellow banana peppers and no, repeat, no jalapeño! This was a poor interpretation of a classic. The wine came halfway into the calamari. The salad was satisfying. After this experience I opted not to order dessert and I cancelled my reservation for the next night. To be fair, this was opening night and problems arise. They obviously didn’t have things right.

Requested in our reservation for an outside table, even though empty tables were visible, did not secure one. Waited 10 minutes for our server to acknowledge us. Had to ask for someone to take care of us. Food was slow, waited over 45 minutes. Asked for a refill on ice tea never came. They may have been busy, but appeared very disorganized. Delivered our lunch to the wrong table. We flagged runner to correct table. Not sure if we'll go back.

Service timely and excellent. Cold plate scimpy .Mushroom French dip very good could have been warmer ,had to ask for au jus .Potatoes excellent. Shrimp on garden salad could have been bigger.

We were there for this weekend’s Sunday brunch - sat for 20 minutes before I needed to ask staff if anyone would attend to our table. Hostess pointed out our waiter and walked away. Our party of four went in to the buffet without any greeting or direction from staff. As we ate our food, we were asked if we wanted anything to drink ( about 40 minutes too late for that question). While the buffet was adequate, the dessert options were lacking. We have been to this buffet before - the difference (lack of quality) was noticeable. Not worth the $45 per person.

It pains me to say this, but the Sunday brunch buffet was below average. I love Chautauqua, the Anthenaeum and the restaurant, and have historically had very positive experiences. The atmosphere - especially when dining on the porch - and staff are wonderful. Unfortunately, the food did not equal the views and service. Perhaps since it was the second day of the season they were still working to hit their stride. I will certainly give it another try, but dry, tough prime rib (couldn’t cut it with a knife), an unappealing made-to-order omelet (strangely colored and textured), with not a dessert in sight was not worth the $45 bill.
