Open since July 4th, 2002, Black Cat Bistro is known for serving Innovative Farm Fresh Fare. The menu changes often as Black Cat Bistro consistently strives to present fare that is reflective of seasonal, local produce and organically raised or sustainable product.The food is especially cognizant of wine pairings to electrify the palate. The Black Cat has received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for nine years in a row.

Black Cat Bistro is small with 45 seats and this is part of what makes it such an intimate dining experience. The service is attentive, unpretentious and refined. The dining rooms are decorated in soothing colors and fabrics. Down pillowed benches frame the edges of two of the three rooms. Candle light adorns the tables covered with white linen. Food is served on white china and wine in crystal Riedel stemware.

The place is run down and needs a face lift. I picked out old lettuce scraps from the cushions used in our booth. The duck was not rendered properly and the cook was uneven. The bok choy was cold and clearly the plate was assembled in stages. A lack of attention to basic details. It was a disappointment. Would not go back.

Such a lovely restaurant. Warm and inviting. Our server was excellent, along with the food ( varied menu, nice wine list) Highly recommend.

It's been a couple of years since we patronized the Black Cat and our only regret is that we hadn't come back sooner. Menu is great and the quality of our dishes was very, very good. There are only a couple of intimate / old house converted setting restaurants in San Luis Obispo county and this one is likely the best. Plus it's in Cambria, such a great town to visit for an hour or a week.

Very good food served attractively. Service outstanding. We were the first diners of the day at 5:15 so quiet. But when others began arriving conversations at all the tables were easily heard by the other diners. Cute place so be sure and go see the namesake poster in the hallway. Vegetables were perfect tender crisp but seafoods (salmon and scallops) were cooked more than I prefer. My dining partner thought medium dry was OK for both so it is just personal preference I guess.

I did get the table I requested so plus for that. We noticed there was no settings on the table. Weird, but we thought it was because, they hadn't got the table totally ready for us. It was not crowded at all. Once we got seated, the servers disappeared. We had to wave our arms to get noticed. I bought wine and no glasses or were offered or they didn't offer to open the bottle. When server finally did, his wine opener was bad and he had to get another one. The duck breast was on the menu, my favorite so we thought we were good to go. We asked for at least some bread and butter and were told they don't bring that or set the table until food is ordered, but they would make an exception. Ok? We started with crab cakes, which were actually very good. We then ordered gnocci which was prepared weirdly. The gnocci was boiled then toasted with an ice cold sauce on top. Ok? Next the duck. I ordered medium rare. They bought cold and practically raw with a bland exterior. When I questioned the exterior I learned that they bake the duck, not pan sear it to crisp up the outer skin. I sent it back and they brought back an obviously micro waved recook with a disgusting taste. We refused the dinner, paid for what we ate and ended up having to get pizza to go down the street. Awful experience - plus it was my husand's birthday. Luckily we still had our mini vacay experience in Cambria to look forward to.

The food was terrific. The flat iron steak with the amazing mango sauce was a big hit. Our server Mauricio was outstanding. The ambience was great sitting in the front room next to the fireplace. We loved our experience at The Black Cat and would recommend it to anyone.

Pleasant intimate atmosphere. Server was very friendly and professional. Food and wine were delicious. Impressed with recommendations on menu of pairings of wine and dishes.
