Standards have fallen since our last visits. We have dined here several times in the near past. The requirement to choose side dishes, only one of which is included, indicates a serious level of penny pinching. This is further illustrated that extra gravy was also charged as an extra. I have never come across this before. The meal itself was satisfactory but no better than that which would be found in a standard pub. Also the desert of rhubarb within a curd content did even offer a hint of rhubarb. ‘Subtle’ was the description offered by the server. All in all prices are at the very top end for a Sunday lunch but the quality is much less than that. The restaurant needs a serious re-think about it’s menu and value for money.

Food was excellent, all very delicious, would definitely recommend for the food. The vegetarian options were lovely and flavourful, much nicer than many you often get in pubs/restaurants. It was a shame that the food was let down by the service. Service was extremley slow, even though restaurant was probably only half full. It took forever to get the drinks we ordered, we were already eating our first course when they finally turned up which is really poor, more so since the food took forever to come out. It was annoying that people who were seated after us got served their drinks and food before we did . Then they messed up the order, we ordered nibbles to start, then one of us ordered a starter before mains. However, the starter was completely forgotten. When the waitress brought out the mains we said we hadn't had the starter yet to which she just said oh sorry saw that has been sitting waiting to come up for a while shall I bring it out now since you have already paid for it. Can't believe she was offering to serve a starter that had been sitting waiting to come out for 30-40 minutes whilst we now had mains in front of us and she assumed we were still paying for the starter that wasn't received. She did agree to take it off the bill when we said we aren't paying for it. Totally bizarre and inappropriate. So disappointing that the wonderful food was spoilt by poor service, so whilst we can certainly recommend for the food we can't for the service.

We ate here over two evenings. On both occasions the food had some real high points. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The hen of the woods parfait was exceptional. First night service was very good and attentive, the second evening was chalk and cheese, we had to chase for the menus and ask to go to our table, food delivery was slow. The dark chocolate, cherry & macadamia nuts desert was very good, but some toffee sauce was delivered after we had started the desert and was unnecessary. The sea bass was small, and underwhelming and very poor value. All of our other courses were very good. Room is a little stark, but large and airy. Overall I give this a highly recommended.

I visited The Black Bull in Sedbergh during a holiday and had an excellent meal. Every course was delicious and the standard of cooking was high. I particularly enjoyed the cod and mussels and my dining companion thought the Herdwick Lamb Wellington superb. We shared the Apple Tarte Tatin and it was fruity, buttery and sweet; everything a dessert should be. The accompanying home made ice cream was perfect. Staff were friendly and helpful but quietly unobtrusive. As it was my birthday I received some complimentary petit fours. Kind and thoughtful. I recommend The Black Bull without reservation, although it probably is a good idea to book beforehand!

Interesting range of pies on 'Pie and Pint Monday'. Service top notch, several interesting, unusual, and tasty variants on the expected. Definitely happy to return on next visit to the Dales.

Was inspired to book as I watch the Great British Menu. We had the Tasting Menu, 7 small courses but bursting with flavour. Each one was so delicious, my favourite was the White Beef, my son loved the Custard. The service was attentive and friendly but not intrusive. I would definitely recommend The Black Bull....scrumptious.

Sunday lunch is always exceptional here and yesterday’s menu was absolutely delicious from start to finish. Service from the team was brilliant and a most enjoyable experience was shared.

Last time we visited we had delicious food. This time was very disappointing. Tough meat in the starter, poor fish dish and soggy chips. We like the service and setting and we can walk to the pub, but this has put us off, as the prices have risen, whilst quality has fallen. Very sad.

The food was fantastic, the Lamb Wellington to die for. Only issue was the length of time between courses but it was completely worth the wait. We will be returning next time we're in the area.
