The Black Bull Inn, Moffat is an independently owned, award winning Scottish hostelry, established 1568. The oldest hostelry in the area, the Inn is well known for its links to Robert Burns, Scotland’s National Poet who visited during his heyday. The Black Bull is also connected to another notable character from history – the controversial Earl (Bonnie) of Dundee, who commandeered the Black Bull as HQ in the 17th century and oversaw the persecution of Scottish Presbyterians from within its walls.
With olde world ambience and atmosphere oozing out of its walls, the Black Bull is a welcoming, warm and interesting place to visit, with touches of traditional Scotland interwoven with contemporary twists and is everything an ancient Scottish hostelry should be. With great food, excellent wines, superb cask ales and beautifully styled rooms the inn never fails to charm both international and UK patrons and their pooches too.

    So good to take dogs somewhere where they are really welcome. Comfortable eating area. Staff were lovely and very attentive. Food was standard pub food and was ok but not amazing. It arrived after a very acceptable wait time and arrived hot. Would definitely return.

    We booked for my Birthday but nothing on the site made me aware that Sundays are carvery only. There was a plate of carvery sauces on our table that looked really unappetising like they had been sitting out all day. We went with carvery anyway. However after we finished our distinctly OK starter we were sat for 20 minutes waiting for someone to clear our plates and give us access to the carvery. There were lots of staff but they just walked past. We just paid for what we had and left. Don’t think it deserves the awards unless service and booking info improves.

    Our meal was lovely,but very big portions! Wouldn't have ordered starter if we had known.

    Excellent friendly service.. good choice of vegetarian options... very efficient staff.. didn't have to wait long for food and it was beautifully cooked and very tasty. Cost was similar to most pubs these days but food was definitely well above average

    Sadly my "ribs" were massively under cooked, second choice - sold out. Settled for Cauliflower cheese off the veggie menu. Service slow, but apologies we're forthcoming.
