The Black Bull Inn, Moffat is an independently owned, award winning Scottish hostelry, established 1568. The oldest hostelry in the area, the Inn is well known for its links to Robert Burns, Scotland’s National Poet who visited during his heyday. The Black Bull is also connected to another notable character from history – the controversial Earl (Bonnie) of Dundee, who commandeered the Black Bull as HQ in the 17th century and oversaw the persecution of Scottish Presbyterians from within its walls.
With olde world ambience and atmosphere oozing out of its walls, the Black Bull is a welcoming, warm and interesting place to visit, with touches of traditional Scotland interwoven with contemporary twists and is everything an ancient Scottish hostelry should be. With great food, excellent wines, superb cask ales and beautifully styled rooms the inn never fails to charm both international and UK patrons and their pooches too.

Unfortunately cannot recommend. We went due to the vegan menu for one of the party, but waiting staff misinformed us for vegan desserts and a palaver over vegan milk for the coffee One of us very ill that night after the mussels, two people had very uninspiring pies with lots of gristle in and a poor serving of hard vegetables and the vegan burger was undercooked. Service was slow, chaotic and we repeatedly had to ask several different people for what we needed. Overall, a very expensive and disappointing evening.

We were running late driving up the M6 past their kitchen closing time so we called them to see what they could do. They took an order over the phone without pre payment even though we offered and it was ready 5 minutes after we arrived Great service, great food, the staff were so accommodating Shame we couldn’t stay there but we were on the way to the Golf open at Troon. Nice to have great service

Very poor experience here this evening. Starters came and were ok then two mains came out..( the so called slow cooked rubs were terrible and clearly not been cooked for long enough to be anywhere near tender ) Over 25 mins since two mains arrived and still two had not arrived - then one of the servers came to ask if we were finished ! Long story short , two mains had clearly been forgotten with nobody being accountable . I asked to speak to the manager but nobody arrived apart from a very apologetic waitress . This place seems best avoided.

TOP CLASS FOOD, FRIENDLY STAFF. ITS A FIRST TIME IN A WHILE THAT I CAN HONESTLY SAY I ENJOYED MY MEAL.

So good to take dogs somewhere where they are really welcome. Comfortable eating area. Staff were lovely and very attentive. Food was standard pub food and was ok but not amazing. It arrived after a very acceptable wait time and arrived hot. Would definitely return.

We booked for my Birthday but nothing on the site made me aware that Sundays are carvery only. There was a plate of carvery sauces on our table that looked really unappetising like they had been sitting out all day. We went with carvery anyway. However after we finished our distinctly OK starter we were sat for 20 minutes waiting for someone to clear our plates and give us access to the carvery. There were lots of staff but they just walked past. We just paid for what we had and left. Don’t think it deserves the awards unless service and booking info improves.
