In 1960, R. J. “Bob” Lee opened The Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo Texas on Route 66, the “Mother Road”. It’s distinctive architecture soon became recognized across the Mother Road as a good stopping place for great steaks grilled over an open flame. The Big Texan is famous for the FREE 72oz steak challenge, which includes eating a salad, baked potato, shrimp cocktail and 72 ounces of beef! Stop in and have a one of a kind experience with large, juicy steaks, cowboys and cowgirls, and take a dive into the Old Wild West!

I had eaten here 40 years ago and didn’t remember much about it other than the 72 oz steak challenge. Our food was just ok. Steak was a good value for the price but quality was lacking. Steak was somewhat tough and was medium rare at best when we ordered medium. It was still cool in the middle and that’s not medium. We had much anticipation going to the restaurant but it did not live up to expectations. Guess I’ll come back in another 40 years…at age 106.

Great tasting steaks. Salad was good and rolls were delicious. Quick service. Our was very nice.

It is best to get a reservation. We got seated almost immediately in a packed place. Food is good for the price. You’ll spend a pretty penny.

Great steak, sides and atmosphere. All steaks cooked as requested, had excellent seasoning and sear, and we also had fun taking pictures afterwards all around the restaurant. Really enjoyed the jalapeño creamed corn, sautéed mushrooms, and loaded baked potatoes. We were seated on the second level which was open to the main dining room, but the downside was we were above the kitchen grill where smoke wafted up and was uncomfortable at times…recommend avoiding that area. Overall 5 stars from this family of 3 adults and 1 teen.

Our second time here while traveling through. Steaks are excellent with many delicious sides to choose from. Fun atmosphere. Highly recommend!

A lively, festive, and fun dining experience. The Cowboy theme is carried out very well. The fried “beef oysters” were very good. My ribeye was cooked as I asked. Is it the best steak? No. But it was good and lots of fun. My next meal will be a large hamburger and another of their delicious beers. Awesome cocktails too.

Very tasty food that was unique. The meat on the hamburger was big, flavorful, and absolutely yummy!

This is a very unique experience and one you should definitely do while in the Amarillo area. Our waitress Harmony was great! The food was delicious and you can’t ask for a better Texas experience.
