The Bear & Ragged Staff in Cumnor is a world away from the Newbury & Swindon roads that stream past only a mile from its door. The heart of the pub is a glorious Tudor beauty. Ancient fireplaces, flagstone floors, and mullioned windows with carved lintels make the bar one of the finest anywhere. A comfortable eatery, conservatory, and South-facing terrace provide spaces for every mood – and winding stairs lead to cosy bedrooms with old oak doorways and beamed ceilings.

I had the aubergine burger which was really hard to eat. Much prefer a veggie burger. The humorous was delicious.

Amazing food and service. Great that they change the menu - now on the autumn menu. Steak was perfectly cooked and the blade of beef was superb. As always the chunky chips are a must

It was just OK Nothing to write home about as the chips were not triple cooked, fish was nice though . Rather expensive, noisy and excited kids on nearby table. They had a party going on at same time hence noise at front largely from band. Not worth the distance and would probably not go again.

We have been several times before to the Bear and Ragged Staff and have enjoyed it every single time, unfortunately this evening was not the same experience. We booked a table for 1900, we waited a long time for a drinks order and to even be shown the specials board. Then our main meals arrived around 2045. Very slow service on both food and drink this evening, this was surprising considering the main restaurant was not busy. We discovered at the end of the meal that there was a very large private event on and also walk ins being accepted. It would have been nice to have been told after booking in advanced that a large party was also booked in. The service unfortunately didn’t live up to the standards which we have previously experienced.

First time back in many years. Lovely lunchtime meal, busier than I expected at this time of year so good to see it is popular. Food was good and service efficient but discreet. Pleasant booth area option which is always welcome for that extra bit of intimacy. Almost full menu which is becoming rarer with many local restaurants having very much restricted choices at lunch. Nice surprise of complimentary birthday dessert. Only slight disappointment was my partner thought the toilets, while of good quality and design, had not been cleaned as well as they could have been. Hopefully this was just an oversight. Overall a really pleasant and well run establishment. Will definitely recommend and return.

Excellent food,good variety of dishes and great value for money. Staff attentive but not putting pressure on you to finish. Would certainly recommend

Food was very over cooked and presentation mixed. Peach pubs usually good but not in this branch on this day.
