The Barre, Arts Centre Melbourne’s sleek space, offers a touch of luxury and hint of showmanship. You’ll find a lively pre- and post-show buzz that takes the bar and eatery from early evening to late night.

The modern Australian menu, with its emphasis on fresh seasonal ingredients, offers both small and larger dishes to be shared and enjoyed with friends. Choose from a well-considered wine list with prominence to local winemakers, an exciting range of craft beers and ciders, or a distinct selection of cocktails and small-batch Australian gins and single malt whiskies.

The world of booze, bubbles and beers is ever-changing and The Barre is excited to also offer a range of alcohol-free options.

From a pre-show sparkling with a share plate, a meal with a fine wine or a mellow late-night drink, we invite you to join us at The Barre.

It was a busy night but there were plenty of staff, mostly young males strolling around nonchalantly looking bemused with no sense of urgency! The service was painfully slow and if it hadn’t been for the only two female staff i doubt we would have got our food! Having said that the food was delicious when it came and the manager and the two female staff were apologetic and gracious. We just made it to our show on time thankfully 😅!

I dine here regularly and it is usually very good but this time i was disappointed. The service was quite slow and the food wasn't up to the usual standard. I ordered baked snapper and it was just so bony. It was quite a small piece and hidden by a pile of salad but underneath the head was still on so half the piece was a bony head. Usually the head waiter asks how your meal is but she came so soon after the meal was served I'd hardly tasted it. When the waiter came to take the plate away I mentioned that the meal was terribly bony but he ignored me and walked away! I don't mind a few bones in fish but this was half bone and there was too much raw onion which repeated on me. We were thinking of having dessert but no one came by to ask if we wanted anything else so we got fed up and left. It was a Monday night so must have had the B team on.

We recently had a very pleasant start to the evening at The Barre before attending a performance at the Recital Centre nearby. The staff were welcoming upon our arrival and when taking our order. The selection of drinks and meals on offer suited our requirements perfectly. The wait staff were attentive and ensured our needs were met throughout. Each course was delicious and came in good time without being rushed. This meant we could take a leisurely stroll to the venue after.

Pre-show dinner. Service was excellent and prompt. The food and wine were gorgeous, especially the halloumi sticks (I need the recipe!) and the Barossa Rosé. Didn’t feel cramped, there was enough space to park my mum’s walker. Would definitely go back again (and again…and again, if just for the halloumi).

Always enjoy a meal or a drink at The Barre. Booked an early meal with friends before an 8.00pm show. Service was excellent. Plenty of attentive waiting staff. The food was fabulous. I had the scallops. Wind choices good. Lovely vibe. Great restaurant.

Always a good choice prior to the theatre. Staff are welcoming, friendly, professional and attentive. Orders are taken readily and drinks and meals served giving time to enjoy, and eat leisurely. Staff thoughtfully warned me of the spice content of my meal. Great place to eat. Thank you.

Excellent spot for a pre-theatre dinner. Very busy so the service was a bit patchy at times, but nevertheless the food arrived quickly in time for our show. A limited by delicious menu and good selection of wines by the glass.

In the past, I could count on quick service and modern Australian food options that had a bit of flare, but were also standard. This time I ordered snapper, expecting to get a filet. Instead I got a fish head and a minimal amount of filet. Very disappointing. I also ordered a marguerita. It came at the same time as my main course and had very strong flavours. Usually, I like to start the meal with a cocktail and then proceed with the main course. It was all dumped on me at the same time. They didn't provide the same kind of service or fare I've come to expect.

The Barre has a new menu which seem to bring it amazingly fast service. This can be good if you are in a rush to get to the theatre, but can leave you at a loose end if you have allowed time for meal delivery (though I would never like to re-live the night it took them over an hour to bring our meals and we had to rush to eat them before the curtain went up). The new menu includes a range of choices across small plates plus mains of calamari, snapper, duck leg, lamb shank, ravioli and a $120 T bone for sharing. The Barre is great for pre-theatre dinner (which is now not as busy with the State Theatre closed). We will be back.
