Recently refurbished, The Alfred Tennyson has built its reputation as a gem in the local community of Belgravia. Experience was lovely, staff great, food delicious. Only annoying thing were the endless pre-experience reminders via text, phone call and emails.

We ordered two Sunday roasts - pretty basic stuff for a bistro-pub you might think. The meat was full of gristle and the vegetables were raw. Note - not al dente or firm, raw. To top it off, they really looked like the saddest plates of food. My supposed leg of lamb with fresh mint sauce was actually a few shavings of gnarled lamb; the mint sauce did a runner. The staff were sweet and clearly embarrassed. We opted to leave and start dinner again elsewhere (Yay Motcombs!). We were still charged for the 4 glasses of wine we drank which I thought was cheeky but I was too hungry to argue. Weird place!

Service was chaotic and sporadic. Oysters arrived in a bowl of water with a couple of ice cubes in, so were also full of tap water too, rather than on a plate of ice - had they been sitting there all day and the ice had melted? The waiter was struggling to carry it as the water was sloshing around so much. No spoon for the shallots, so had to use a fork (which didn’t work) no fennel pickle which is what we wanted to try but were only told this after the oysters arrived at the table. Mains also arrived at the same time as the oysters - the waiter stood holding our mains next to us whilst we quickly ate our oysters. Not what you want to be doing at £4.50 a pop! The veg and Yorkshire pudding on the roast was all cold (he had not been standing long so it was cold when he left the kitchen) the potatoes hot and ok (not great) the beef was lovely but didn’t really make up for the rest of the meal. The advertised “horseradish crème fraise” was absent but eventually some standard jarred horseradish appeared after a couple of requests. Really disappointing all round- looks as though they have a problem with quality on Sunday judging by other reviews which I have now since read.

Excellent Sunday roast - lamb with mint sauce , roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. Great service and a wonderful outside table. Great cask ale on draught. Highly recommended.

The food was great, and staff so friendly and on the ball. My steak tartare was really tasty and the chips were great. The only disappointing element was the Peppers that lacked flavour.

Met some friends for lunch. Two of whom ordered the spring salad. Salads arrived without feta, radish or dressing. The manager said radish was overrated, then tried to argue the Parmesan was feta - weird. Disappointing lunch

We don’t come as often as we’d like. It’s always a brilliant evening as the welcome is so warm. The food is great, the beer and drinks are top draw. I would highly recommend the pub to anyone who may just want a quick drink or a longer night out and food.

We had a dreadful meal here. My Manhattan was watery, flavourless and garnished with lemon. Yuk. The waiter forgot us completely. We ordered and what came was wrong because he’d given us the Sunday menu. I ordered a chicken roast. What came was a single breast without any sides. It’s not my fault he protested. Whose fault was it then? He vanished. A lovely waitress tried very hard to improve matters and add some sides but even these were wrong and horrible. Oily chips (not skinny fries), chilly drenched broccoli. By now the chicken was cold. And it wasn’t cooked through. Husbands broccoli salad as like a school dinner. All awful. Monday night. I can only guess it’s the chef’s day off. They didn’t charge for the food which is fair because we didn’t eat it. A shame all round. The waitress, I must stress, was most apologetic.
