On September 18, a friend and I went to check out the new boutique hotel in Litchfield, which is a converted county courthouse building constructed in 1890. We had made a dinner reservation at their restaurant (The Courtroom) and had a drink before dinner at the rooftop bar (The Verdict.) Our evening there was a wonderful experience, more amazing given that the hotel had been open for less than a week, and it was only the fifth evening for the restaurant. Without exception, all the staff was so nice and helpful—the woman at the front desk, the bartender at the rooftop bar, the restaurant maître d, and our server at dinner. The rooftop bar was a lovely way to spend a hour in such a well-designed and comfortable space. The restaurant is in the old courtroom and is a nice mix of vintage and contemporary. Both the service and our dinners were superb. We shared the homemade chips and dip, followed by a Caesar salad, and the steak frites and baked stuffed cod. All were excellent. Timing of the courses was perfect, not rushed or seemingly slow. Overall, a wonderful evening in a unique and welcoming place.

Elegant setting in old courtroom. Delicious food, but service not up to par. A long (45 min!) wait for dessert put a dent in the overall experience.

Best place for a nice meal in the county! I’ve eaten at a lot of top Michelin restaurants and for litchfield county restaurants the Abner is a cut above the rest! The food was great, the service is really top tier and the new renovations of the wheel building make it fun and exciting to eat in a local piece of history.

Service in this new restaurant was lovely. The room is stylish but cold - even the large floral arrangement on the bar was dominated by an icy green. The menu tends toward the heavy - meat and cream predominate. (To be fair, there were salads and some fish) My husband’s starter was truly tiny, and I am not typically concerned with portion size. My halibut was crunchy on top (a minute too long on the stove?) and the sauce had no punch. Perhaps it’s all opening week “finding your feet” because this area needs dining choices.

We got to try out the Courtroom Hotel and Verdict Rooftop bar at the newly opened (only a few days old) Abner Hotel in downtown Litchfield (in the old courthouse). They were a bit short staffed in the bar the night of our reservation, so they were just serving complimentary Prosecco on the rooftop to those who had a dinner reservation, and it was great to see the space up (quite a bit with some couches as well as tables to sit at). Inside, the restaurant was a nice, bright space. We sat at a table for 4- just wish it was a little bigger. The staff was so friendly and efficient and the food was very good. Any issues we had (very few, but being new, they are still working out a few kinks), were quickly resolved. We had the grilled peach appetizer, cottage pie, and rigatoni bolognese. For desserts we had the cheesecake, apple brown Betty, and chocolate torte. I look forward to going again sometime!

Only the 2nd night open for this place and it seemed to run pretty smoothly. Friendly staff and creative food. Rooftop bar is great and its in a wonderful location. Entree's we had were very good (halibut and pork Milanese) apps were ok (lobster Thermador and mushroom croquette) I think this place has very good potential
