Comfort food from Kerala, India's spice garden. Thattu is located in the beautiful Chicago neighborhood of Avondale. It was born of Chef Margaret Pak’s love for the southwest Indian coastal cuisine of Kerala. Our menu brings you traditions of Kerala along with playful interpretations from our culinary team. Rich with aromatic spices, coconut and curry leaves, the cuisine is a celebration of the bounty of the land and the sea.

Sadya is a vegetarian celebration feast unique to the South Indian state of Kerala. The feast will be served traditional style on fresh banana leaves and everything should be eaten by hand - no utensils! It will feature approximately 15 dishes including dessert. Beverages will be available for purchase. We will also be featuring a traditional flower carpet - pookkalam - and you can participate in creating it too. The Thattu team will be available to answer all your questions about Onam and Sadya. Please arrive on time for the event. Food will be served for everyone together within 20 minutes of the event start time. Children over 2 require tickets. No cancellations or refunds. You can transfer your ticket to someone else.

A wonderful experience overall. Friendly and helpful staff. We had 2 appetizers - the mushroom and eggplant dishes - and kadala curry with appam. Everything was delicious. we'll definitely be coming back, and bringing more people with us!

We are so happy we finally got to try Thattu’s dinner. We had been there for lunch and loved it. Everything we had was so flavorful. We cannot wait to go again.

We read so many great reviews and were excited to try it! Food was just ok. Ambience felt sterile. You order everything through your phone (barely any interaction w staff except for bringing you water). It felt impersonal. Sadly, I don’t recommend and wouldn’t go back.

The food was fantastic, every dish had its own unique flavor. Service was good, but aside from the food my favorite reason for supporting Thattu is that they pay their staff a living wage, which means no tipping, however the food is still outstanding in quality and value. I’d go back regularly.

Food is flawless. Drinks are fantastic. Value is incredible for what is among the best South Asian food you will eat anywhere.

Based on the reviews, three of us chose this place to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The reservation makes you put CC down in case you don’t show up for your rezzi, which comes off as it’s some fine dining restaurant. When I got there and opened the door for our 6:30 reservation, literally my sister and I cringed and muttered the words - what’s this a school cafeteria? The QR code and online ordering system was pretty easy and their staff does come to introduce the menu and answer any questions but the last thing I wanted to do is be on my phone during my friend’s celebration. Our dishes came out fast. Food was hit or miss… flavors were off. We ordered kappa bonda - they were very dry, not a lot of flavor and the crispiness was missing. Kerala Fried Chicken Bites - delicious and great serving size. Mushroom Mezhukkupuratti - very flavorful and mushroom texture was perfect it but didn’t really feel like it should be an appetizer. I felt like a side of rice should have been recommended with the mushroom dish. Kallumakaya - extremely salty and unbearable to eat. We asked the server if it’s supposed to be this salty and she responded “it is full of flavors”. She did offer to take it back, remove it off our bill and pass along feedback to the chef - we agreed. Malabar Chicken Biriyani - too much rice and not enough chicken. Chicken Ghee Roast - probably the best dish we had, the sauce was amazing. Kadala Curry - overwhelming amount of chickpeas, great flavor of broth/sauce. The most disappointing thing was that short rib they advertise on the menu isn’t served Mon-Thur, it’s only on Friday and Saturday. The dish our sever said she’ll remove wasn’t removed and we paid the bill as it’s literally a click on your phone to close the check out. When I pulled our receipt to split the cost with my party, noticed the charge. Called restaurant twice and no one answered. Wouldn’t recommend or come back and with a $150 check of mediocre Indian food left us disappointed.
