Comfort food from Kerala, India's spice garden. Thattu is located in the beautiful Chicago neighborhood of Avondale. It was born of Chef Margaret Pak’s love for the southwest Indian coastal cuisine of Kerala. Our menu brings you traditions of Kerala along with playful interpretations from our culinary team. Rich with aromatic spices, coconut and curry leaves, the cuisine is a celebration of the bounty of the land and the sea.

Everything was great except that ordering was through the QR code, so it was tough to get the wait staff if you wanted to ask questions.

If you are looking for quality Indian food, I cannot recommend this place enough! We ordered several dishes, but the Mushroom Mezhukkupuatti, Biriyani, and Pork Chop were standouts - phenomenal flavors! The drinks were delicious, as well. Truly loved all of the food and will be back again soon! Innovative restaurant in that you order everything through the webpage and it comes out as it is ready -- less emphasis on traditional service, which we loved, as well!

Food was great & came out fast; fish fry was the highlight. Service was lackluster for the price point. Owner was working the host stand when we got there, he didn’t really welcome us to his restaurant or say bye to us when we left. Waitress barely explained ordering to us (you order on your phones) & seemed put off when we made a mistake when ordering. The restaurant is quite loud, they should consider some sound dampening furniture or fixtures or something. Was expecting a better hospitality experience for this price point since this place is getting so much praise. Again, food was super solid but the overall experience was mixed.

Had the best experience. Being from Mangalore, the Onam meal was so close to home. Made me appreciate all the great food I used to eat back home

Loved the Onam Sadhya experience.Food was authentic & flovors spot on. Big shout out to Vinod & Margaret. Matta rice & even kerala banana was served. Olan, kaalan, pachadi& avial prepared to perfection. The whole experience took me back to my childhood .Thattu is a big Part of the Indian diaspora in the states. Will return back with friends & family.

One of my fav south Indian restaurant in chicago, love their Onam Sadya (must try experience) every year September!!

I would skip it. Limited menu. Food is not authentic .Biriyani was not available. The fish polichithu was below average. Appam was thick and not soft.

Our servers were great about sharing their insights on the menu and giving us recommendations. Food was excellent, with unique flavor profiles. I like the shared staffing approach with a no tip process. Servers were always around and they get paid fairly every night. Cool place!

Thattu is delicious! It was my 2nd visit, after a birthday lunch. The dinner menu was slightly different, and honestly missed the peppery Chettinad chicken from last visit. I was excited to find more GF options. I think we over-ordered our food, because of the way you order and pay online is a bit odd and wasn't sure about portion size. I applaud that they pay a fair wage and tips are included. I don't mind the technology but it does mean for a table of several folks, you either do a group order (which honestly seems more confusing) or each do one separately, on your phone. It's a bit hard to know how much food to order when you just want to try a few items, share and then decide later, if you want more or even dessert. We were not rushed, and the interactions with staff were great. I just don't care for this method of ordering. In any case, don't forget to order the delicious GF flatbread, which isn't on their online menu anymore, because they sell out too fast. But ask for it, but before you close out your tab, so they can add it to your order for you. The portions were larger than I expected, so had leftovers, which were delicious. I look forward to going back to try more, but especially that peppery chicken dish! GF dessert options are the tasty Pretty Cool ice cream bars. Thattu is a hidden gem!
