Comfort food from Kerala, India's spice garden. Thattu is located in the beautiful Chicago neighborhood of Avondale. It was born of Chef Margaret Pak’s love for the southwest Indian coastal cuisine of Kerala. Our menu brings you traditions of Kerala along with playful interpretations from our culinary team. Rich with aromatic spices, coconut and curry leaves, the cuisine is a celebration of the bounty of the land and the sea.

    Second time visiting. Really enjoying the beers from Azadi Brewing. Tried more items + same selection as previous visit. One of the new (to me) items was the beet pastry, and it was so flaky and pretty. I didn't really understand the eggplant dish at all, however. The entreés are all stand outs 👍🏻 Looking forward to returning again.

    The food of Kerala is underrepresented in the average Indian restaurant menu and Thattu emphatically rectifies that oversight. Particularly delicious were the Chicken Ghee Roast, the Chemmeen & Kappa (spicy prawns with a cambodge and coconut milk sauce and mashed yucca) and a soft shell crab chili fry. Don’t miss the appam (a delicious fermented rice and coconut milk crepe) to sop up all the fantastic sauce.

    Amazing food. Brought me close to home and all the good memories. Love it. May go again for dinner tonight. Haha

    We really enjoyed our entree and drinks. Everything is different, flavorful and fresh. We especially loved the shrimp potato dish. I love that they pay their staff a living wage. And when we got to speak to the staff, they were super nice. We had kinda strange service though. No one told us we needed to order on the App instead of with a person. It would be great if when they sat you, they let you know how it works since this is not a normal experience -- that would set expectations. We didn't get silverware setup or napkins, so asked a couple times. Still only one napkin. Super small tweaks but smooth those out and it is a great place.

    We had 6:30 reservation and they were already out of the thing I had wanted to order…short ribs. I asked owner if I could reserve it for my next visit. He said no. To get it, I’d have to have a 5:00 reservation! I had the fish which was good, but I was very disappointed to not be able to get what I planned to get.
