Tempura Ono is one of the most distinguished tempura restaurants in Tokyo. Not only has it played a key role in tempura history, but Tempura Ono is renowned for its exquisite service and high quality dishes. Tempura Ono has been featured in major gourmet magazines. Regularly visited by VIP customers, Tempura Ono is highly regarded in the Japanese community for its excellence and expertise.
The interior is designed in a traditional Japanese style, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere. Seating is limited to 13 counter seats, allowing plenty of opportunities to observe and absorb Japanese tempura culture close up. Chef Shimura (Area Producer of Cool Japan, the Government of Japan) enjoys sharing his tempura stories and beliefs while recommending Japanese drinks, all in English. Given the hospitality and cuisine on offer, Tempura Ono guarantees a dining experience that is not to be missed.

This was my most memorable tempura experience. I didn’t know tempura can be served in so many ways. I’m used to shrimp and vegetable tempura only in the states. The chef Shimura was not only an excellent chef, he was very personable and entertaining. Our meals were served in a sushi bar style where your meal is cooked in front of you and served by the chef. He explains every item being served. The tempura dishes were cooked to perfection. Some of the most memorable dishes include the amazing tempura taco, tempura oyster severed over a mushroom sauce and tempura waygu beef. The chef even sat with us after the the meal and gave us valuable recommendations on what things we should experience while in Japan. Highly recommend this restaurant if you want a complete tempura experience.

My family of 8 had lunch at Tempura Ono, raving how delicious the food was. As I was still traveling outside Tokyo, we made reservations about a week later . Everybody in our 5 person group was tremendously excited! FOOD - We also had lunch and sat at the counter with three other customers that we made “ friends” with. The process was amazing to watch: Chef would cook up the entree in one batch, then proceed to pass to each person from his right to left, counter clockwise . Since we sat to chef’s far left side of the counter, we saw each delectable item served to other patrons before the morsel landed on our own plate. Food 4 1/2 stars I would’ve come back BUT… 1) we paid about $125 USD per person for lunch versus my other family member who went the previous week and paid about $55 USD for lunch. Our price was doubled per person . 2) One person in our party couldn’t make the meal due to a medical emergency which we told the chef. We conveyed that we would pay for the meal since we understand it’s not cancellable but requested we get the meal served and we will eat the food if we had to pay for it. We didn’t get the meal we had to pay for although we asked. Never came! :( What? When my family went to Tempura Ono during the prior week they also had a cancellation but were served the entire meal of the missing person which they paid for it. So in short, the food is exceptional. But having to A) pay double the price for the same exact lunch meal as everyone else B) not getting the meal when we requested it Yet still having to pay anyway… well, you know how I feel.

I loved it. The food was great. The chef was amazing. I love tempura but I didn't know tempura can be so good.

Excellent food, carefully prepared, served with instructions and explanations directly from the chef. Small restaurant with 12 counter seats makes for an intimate experience. The staff made sure we always had drinks and the chef went above and beyond to make our evening special. The best tempura I’ve ever had, so light and flavourful, they obviously have very good sources for vegetables and fish. Overall it was an amazing evening

Probably the best restaurant in Tokyo awesome food, the chef is fantastic very open friendly and speaks good English. We were 2 and a business group of 10 were there as well we had a great time. Will definitely be back.
