The name of the restaurant is inspired by the Legend of Janare of Benevento. Strega means ‘witch’ in Italian and Benevento is considered the “city of witches”.
At Strega, our mission is to transport our guests to the Italy we cherish. Drawing inspiration from traditions across the Italian peninsula, we are dedicated to crafting an authentic Italian experience. With a profound appreciation and understanding of Italy’s rich history and culinary heritage, we prioritize using imported Italian products and are committed to maintaining authenticity in our recipes and menu selections.
At Strega, we believe that cooking with seasonal, authentic ingredients means there is not need for unnecessary embellishment - our food tastes great, is fresh, and at its peak. Our experience is crafted through a series of selected choices. We take pride in serving freshly made dishes, embracing wholesome Italian cooking with fresh and healthy ingredients.
We look forward to serving downtown New Haven.

A wonderful dinner; the menu is inventive, the food was delicious, service was great, and the space is lovely. We highly recommend Strega!

Food was sublime. Portions were tasting menu sized for full entree pricing but the overall depth of flavors was very satisfying. Service was impeccable. The table behind us was stunningly loud. Number of hard surfaces amplified the noise in a small space.

We have been to all Strega locations locally… Pray for, Milford, and now this location in New Haven. We elected to take part of the chef selection, menu of five courses for the evening along with five wine pairings. Four of the five courses were very good, but I would say the fifth there was a fifth one that was not very popular with either one of us. It was a Kalamar dish stuffed with a mashed potato mixture with some Indian spices. Although we did tell the hostess that we did want I have lobster be part of one of the courses. They opted to have all four courses have some form of seafood in them. That was a bit of overkill and would’ve been nice to have one of the dishes include, some beef or pork or chicken. Any event it was a great evening and we would come back another time for sure.

Fantastic experience! My girlfriend and I went to Strega New Haven upon recommendation of a friend to celebrate our 1 year anniversary. The staff was very friendly and professional. For food we shared the carpaccio to start, then she had the Short Rib and I the Ragu, and we split the tiramisu to end. Both the food and service were perfection. For libations she had the chef recommended wine, and I partook in the house Negroni and Strega nightcap. These were perfectly recommended and prepared. I cannot recommend this establishment strongly enough.

Exquisite and delicate flavors beautifully presented. We ordered two appetizers and four different entrees and all were exceptional.

The food and service were fantastic! The appetizers and meals were delicious. We didn’t have dessert but I’m guessing it would have been delicious also.
