State of Grace is a coastal, South Texas neighborhood restaurant in the refurbished Lamar-River Oaks Shopping Center. Elegant but casual, its elevated comfort food by executive chef Bobby Matos is executed at the highest level in a welcoming, beautiful space. The jubilant medley of old favorites played with new spice, accent, and freshness lends itself to southern, American, Latin, Gulf Coast, German and Asian influences. Chef-owner Ford Fry’s first venture outside of Atlanta, State of Grace is located in the neighborhood where Ford grew up and nods to his childhood memories fused with Houston’s evolution into a melting pot of cultures and cuisines.

    My friends and I have a tradition of celebrating our December birthdays at State of Grace. We were excited to go as it had been 5 years since we last went. The menu had changed, so we were looking forward to trying out new items. All of the food was delicious. We had 2 servers, and one of them was horrible, hence why I rate our experience poor on service. When we asked him to give us a tour of the new menu, he only pointed to the most expensive items like King crab legs, veal, cote de bœuf. When we asked about the tortellini, entrecôte and simple fish, he made an ugly face and said those items were not good and did not recommend them. I asked for him to describe them, and he did so unwillingly and gave a very poor description so we would not order them. Good thing my friend had watched a video of the chef's recommendations beforehand who himself recommended the tortellini as one of the items. We ordered them and thought they were very good. I had to ask for bread twice before he brought it out. I also asked for him to bring the appetizers first, and insisted we place the entire order upfront. He saw us chatting and still enjoying our 4 appetizers, and urged us to eat fast because the "kitchen was going to close." The other server, also came by and we asked him to hold our main dishes and he did so with no problem. He also presented us with the deserts and recommended the most popular - not the most expensive like the first server! The first server brought us the bill, and after my friend signed it, he took it without acknowledging the rest of us nor thanking us for dining there. We left the restaurant with a very bad taste from our experience with the first server. We chose a fancy and expensive dinner expecting excellent service. Yet the first server wanted to upsell us and was very stuck up. Next year, I will pick a different restaurant to celebrate my birthday, and certainly not drive from The Woodlands to be talked down like that again!

    This restaurant recently changed their menu, and unfortunately, it’s been a disappointing shift. We’ve been loyal patrons for years, primarily for their happy hour oysters, which used to feature an impressive selection of 10-12 varieties. The mix of Gulf Coast and East Coast oysters was consistently well-curated, and we always found high-quality options that kept us coming back. In fact, we even created a list of our favorite oysters based on what we enjoyed here. However, on our most recent visit, the selection had been cut in half, leaning heavily towards Gulf Coast oysters, and the quality was noticeably lacking. The experience was underwhelming enough that we immediately started searching for other restaurants with better oyster selections. While it’s understandable for restaurants to update their menus occasionally, it’s crucial to remember what keeps regulars coming back. In this case, the extensive, high-quality oyster selection was a key draw, and its decline has left us reconsidering our loyalty.

    We were continually being pressured and rushed by the wait staff, from the moment we sat down to the moment we got our check, and the staff rushed us to pay our tab and release the table. They made it so obvious, and the icing on the cake was when the manager came by and offered to buy us a drink if we moved to the bar. And with all that constant swirling about us, we didn’t enjoy our meal and certainly it wasn’t worth $300…

    The staff is gracious and professional. The new menu did not disappoint me; I was anxious about the change. The execution of each dish was perfect. State of Grace is my first Houston meal each time I go there. It will remain so. Thank you all for the wonderful evening.

    Most incredible filet I’ve ever had in my life and believe me I’ve had several, ask for Dominique he’s a fantastic server. He will take great care of you!! believe him when he says to order the banana foster!!

    The location is convenient and the ambience is so pretty that you really want this place to be great but…..it misses the mark. The food and service last night were not good. The service was soooo slow and the food was just Ok. It took a while for our waiter to come to the table, it took a while for our drinks to arrive and they had not cleared the salad plates when our entrees arrived. I was giving this place another shot since someone had told me they recently updated the menu but I don’t think I’ll be back. It tries hard but it feels mismanaged. Maybe they are short staffed? It doesn’t run like a well oiled machine. It’s a frantic paced place. Example, staff trying to clear dishes and pick up and replace silverware from our table while also placing our entrees down at the table all at the same time. The bread was just OK and they bring a mountain of butter (almost bigger than the little loaf they give you! Ha) to the table. Positive note, my Filet Mignon was good. Not great. Asparagus was meh.

    Excellent dinner! Dominique was a fairly polished waiter, he knows the menu pretty well and his recommendations were delicious. We started with the steak tartar along with the bone marrow add on. On to the redfish topped with lump crabmeat, along with Cacio e pepe. (Pepered Pasta) Great side dish. Great overall experience, don’t miss the complimentary cookies on the way out, delicious finish.

    We had dinner for three in their private dining room - great ambiance, lower noise level. Two dozen east coast oysters were delightful, served ice cold, opened to perfection, with delicious condiments - as always at State of Grace. Being regulars at SOG, we ordered our usual - Caesar salad, blackened redfish, Cacio et pepe pasta, and topped it off with their chocolate pecan ball. All were delightful, which, along with the normal friendly, efficient serving staff and attentive management team, keep us coming back again and again. Keep up the great work SOG team!
