Stark is located in East Mersea, Essex and is owned and run by Ben and Sophie Crittenden, who opened their first site in Broadstairs back in December 2016 with the aim of securing a better work/life balance and enabling Ben to enjoy more time with their three young children, Ivy, Rosa and Arlo. Before relocating to Mersea Island, Stark was the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Thanet and one of five in the whole of Kent.

At Stark, only one, set tasting menu is served with no options or alternatives available. Because of this, Stark is unable to cater for any allergies or dietary requirements, for any reason as all guests eat the exact same meal each night. Ben creates a menu from high quality, seasonal ingredients, using his creativity and passion to create delicious food and provide a unique and exciting eating experience for customers.

Stark is a very intimate, relaxed restaurant, whose only demand of you is that you sit back, trust us with your dinner and enjoy the experience.

A set menu of the chef's choosing. All guests eat the same menu each night and, because of this, we are unable to cater for any allergies or dietary requirements. An accompanying wine flight is available and needs to be pre-ordered at the time of booking. A pre-payment of £50 is required to secure the booking and this will be deducted from the bill on the day of the reservation.

Food is fabulous, honestly among the best I've eaten (including a number of other Michelin starred restaurants). Service is uncomplicated, efficient and friendly with the focus firmly where it should be on the food. The wine pairings were excellent and included some more daring choices which complimented each course perfectly. I cannot recommend more highly.

Michelin star quality food and wine..it won't be long... Nothing else to say - except go.. and eat there. If you're a foodie, you can't fail to appreciate it.

Exceptional food and wine . A great addition to the area and worthy successor to Mehalahs which we loved !! A very acceptable AF beer aswell 😉

Hit and miss unfortunately. Some outstanding dishes, some boring. The food was a good experience but unfortunately the staff’s knowledge let them down as well as lack of atmosphere. The wine pairing was outsourced and so the staff didn’t know anything about the wines, where they were from, why they had been chosen and no tasting or pairing notes. They were simply plonked down in front of us. There wasn’t even a welcome drink and I don’t think they had even tasted them with the dishes themselves. At this level and price point that was extremely disappointing. We could only book a table at 6pm or 8:30pm yet it was half-empty and we were told they reserve the tables of 4 for the core times, meaning a table of two gets bad choice of times. This meant we were the only people there for the first 45 minutes and it took a long time for any atmosphere to build. The decor is very cool, relaxed, quirky but let down by the door into the cleaning kitchen wide open, unsightly and noisy. It was our anniversary, which was on the booking notes, but that wasn’t acknowledged. We were asked to keep our cutlery but there was nowhere to put it. None of the small things and attention to detail you would expect from a place with a Michelin star. I’m glad we had the experience, some of it was fantastic and memorable but overall it fell flat and far from expectations from a Michelin starred restaurant. Hopefully just teething problems from the move and in a couple of months it will be worth trying again.

We heard that Stark had relocated from Broadstairs to East Mersea and thought we'd give it a go. Very glad we did! The food and wine paring were very good. The cod was our favourite dish from the 6-course menu although all the others were super tasty and generous in size. An eclectic mix of background music that some may find a bit odd; we had mixed views on that but it wasn't too distracting. Highly recommended and we hope that Ben and Sophie make a success of their new venture.
