Stark is located in East Mersea, Essex and is owned and run by Ben and Sophie Crittenden, who opened their first site in Broadstairs back in December 2016 with the aim of securing a better work/life balance and enabling Ben to enjoy more time with their three young children, Ivy, Rosa and Arlo. Before relocating to Mersea Island, Stark was the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Thanet and one of five in the whole of Kent.

At Stark, only one, set tasting menu is served with no options or alternatives available. Because of this, Stark is unable to cater for any allergies or dietary requirements, for any reason as all guests eat the exact same meal each night. Ben creates a menu from high quality, seasonal ingredients, using his creativity and passion to create delicious food and provide a unique and exciting eating experience for customers.

Stark is a very intimate, relaxed restaurant, whose only demand of you is that you sit back, trust us with your dinner and enjoy the experience.

A set menu of the chef's choosing. All guests eat the same menu each night and, because of this, we are unable to cater for any allergies or dietary requirements. An accompanying wine flight is available and needs to be pre-ordered at the time of booking. A pre-payment of £50 is required to secure the booking and this will be deducted from the bill on the day of the reservation.

Very welcoming and attentive from arrival to departure. Food was amazing, but just below the service Sophie. The service was relaxed and faultless, many thanks to you both. We wish you all best in your new location, which will well deserved.

It was amazing - food was beautiful in taste and presentation. I enjoyed the flight of wines that complimented the food. The service was excellent. Loved the decor and the plates/bowls very quirky.

Stark is an amazing experience, the concept, the flavours and the service is perfect for a dinner treat. The wine pairing works very well too. The ambience is great, just enough hubbub so you know everyone else is enjoying their time too but still able to talk to your dinner companions Thank you Stark for a very, very good evening

An outstanding menu and cooking. Truly worthy of the Michelin *. A small but atmospheric restaurant in the back of beyond in East Mersea. Welcoming front of house and friendly service. The taster menu was accompanied by several surprise appetisers ( amuse bouche x3 which was a surprise and welcome addition. The menu was delightfully different to the standard “ three course meal” and the dishes were exquisite and flavourful. Stark is welcome addition in an area of north Essex which has many good restaurants but no Michelin star restaurants locally. I thoroughly recommend it to all receptive foodies.

Incredible food, amazing service and wonderful atmosphere. This will be our new go to restaurant as it is consistently amazing. We were so impressed with the new location and overwhelmed because it still has the same feel as STARK Broadstairs which we loved so much. We enjoyed every dish, especially the lamb and the wine pairings worked perfectly. Can’t wait to return.

Outstanding, Outstanding, Outstanding. Ben and Sophie are simply brilliant. The tasting menu is excellent, beautifully cooked and balanced, presented wonderfully and accompanied by superb paired wines. We loved the flavours and textures. I cannot recommend Stark highly enough and I am delighted they moved to Mersea Island. What an add to the local cuisine.

Perfectly proportioned perfection. The tasting menu is amazing, restaurant vibe on the right side of edgy, intimate and extremely welcoming. Every dish (and its wine pairing, definitely opt for the wine flute), was carefully crafted and delicious. If I had to pick a favourite the trout dish might be it, subtle brilliance. Every flavour popped. If you haven’t been - go! Amazing team, superb chef and worth every penny! Super hard working team - Michelin in Mersea! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
