The food we had last night was decent but certainly not worth the hype. The ox liver was served cold, with a few slices scattered among the well dressed chicory (?) leaves. However, I wish we knew this dish was not intended to be served warm as we would have chosen something else. We like liver but prefer it when it's freshly cooked and served warm. The crispy pig skin was so crispy that was almost unedible. We've had this dish before in other places, particularly in Spain, and it can be delicious if properly cooked. The roast pork's side zucchinni were boiled to death, while the pork itself was "al dente" :)). It should have been quite the opposite, a melt in your mouth pork and a crispier version of veggies. The John Dory with leeks was quite good and properly cooked, while the gem lettuce salad has a pungent vinegar dressing which would have been good if not too vinegar-ey. All in all, I believe they need to improve the kitchen skills above all. Otherwise, the service was good albeit a bit absent.

We were so looking forward to St John. It was our first time back in London after 20 years and it was the only restaurant we booked ahead for during our week long stay. What an incredible disappointment. No vibe whatsoever, no music, an empty restaurant and staff that put us at a back table even though we pointed out there was space everywhere. We walked there from Mayfair and the vibe in the boozers nearby was palpable. St John’s had nothing. The waitstaff lacked personality. They didn’t give us any explanation on the history or the nose to tail experience. Even by 8.30pm, the restaurant was quiet. We went next door to the ivy and it had everything St John didn’t. Don’t waste your money.

It was my first time at the legendary St John restaurant. I didn’t have the income or the social circle to visit when this restaurant was in its hey day but always promised myself I would one day. I tried to get a table at the original location with its original menu for its 30 year celebration during this month of September -to try and gage what all the fuss was about and make up for missing out the first time around, but of course this was wishful thinking. So I settled for a table at the next available option in the basement of the Marylebone location. Upon first impression the staff were very friendly and anttentive and I would say that this helps. I should have perhaps gone with some company as I eventually realised the menu leans towards a more communal type of meal, and I did end up feeling a bit self conscious in that dimly lit basement surrounded by affluent tourists bragging about how great their Summer has been. The food was neither good nor bad. I’ve eaten in many cities all over the world from Michelin star to cantina style set ups and this meal had nothing exceptional at all. I started with bread and olives followed by the cold mackerel and fennel. It was really just OK. Paired with a white wine that was pretty well OK. There was a very long wait between my starter and main course which sort of killed the meal for me. I ended up filling up on the bread and olives so by that time was not up to ordering a larger entree, I felt like it did not really deserve the money anymore. Next up I ordered the short horn salad and a side of potatoes. The meat and leaves were good, with a delicate balance of horseradish. The potatoes were Ok. The desert was actually the best part. I had the buttermilk cake with apricots. I felt they got this right all the way. The milk cake was flavoursome and creamy in all the right ways and the apricots roasted to perfection. I think I need to give St John’s a second try before deciding to write it off completely.

We had a wonderful time at St.John Marylebone for lunch; it was everything you would expect and the food was exceptional- we ended up ordering 7 plates and left nothing behind us! The potted veal and pork and brill with leek are a must. Five stars!

Very good lunchtime meal but the plate of mussels + fennel was a bit tasteless and bland. Other dishes inlcuding rarebit, smoked eel and cold roast pork were excellent . House wine by the glass was very good too
