Sol y Sombra has been Dundee’s most popular tapas bar since it opened in 2011. Born out of a love for Spanish food and culture, we have created a menu of fresh, authentic and simple tapas. The aim is to recreate the feel of a typical Spanish family meal, so everyone has to share and enjoy the meal as one.

Having dined at Sol Y Sombre previously we thought the food was a little disappointing, a lot of dishes were the same as previously and looking on the website at sample menus this is what we expected. However, some dishes were of a lower standard than previous experiences ie chicken salad now potato salad and no meatballs (one of our favourites). There were a lot of drinks on the menu also unavailable, possibly due to a new menu coming. Overall we had a nice evening as we were out with friends and it was their first experience there. Understandably it is under new ownership and they’ll be finding what works and changing things as they go. We’ll definitely try again…hopefully the meatballs will be back on the menu!

Great food as always, generous portion sizes. Perfect for a chilled evening with friends. Will definitely be back

Extremely dissatisfied and disappointed on how this place has gone since being taken over in such a short period of time after the new owner promised nothing would change the quality from previous owners. Straight away, La Ola beer has gone...a Spanish small authentic brewery beer...when asked why...was told its not really beer...it's like bellhaven beer...it's not really a beer?? They have got rid of the nuts before they serve the cold tapas...why? The owner...yes the owner is allergic to nuts!! Never heard of a restaurant taking something off the menus due to the owner being allergic....so the customer obviously doesn't come first then? Menu has sized down considerably too and is not as good as it ALWAYS was, no matter if it was lunch or dinner. Clearly gone for cheaper options, prawns half the normal size and not as fresh or as juicy, allioli - mayo with a hint of garlic - nothing like which was amazing but this was really just mayo! Then the kebabs......wow....really can see how the cost saving is going towards....used to be a meal own it's own and the star of the show....now....such a huge disappointed and failure. Used to go to this restaurant at least once a month before it was sold but after this experience I'm not actually sure I would return. If this was a new venture I would give it benefit of the doubt and try again but as it was bought over and the new owner new how popular it was with locals and regulars and promised it would all be the same.....can't see that happening . They have clearly come in and looked at cutting costs from the get go, unfortunately, it's us, the paying punter who are at the receiving end receiving less quality products for the same price we paid for before far superior produce

Hi Darren, Its disappointing to read comments like this as the Team at Sol y are really upset. The food and Spanish suppliers have not changed. Aga still makes the allioli from scratch (for 10 years). The kebabs have the same imported morcilla as they always have and the kitchen staff with an average of 11 years service are still the same. You didn't raise any issues when you dined and since the previous owners son was one of the people that served you, your comments could have been addressed. The menu has not downsized , Renata and Beata have been preparing the kebabs and starters for the last 14 years. Nut allergies are a common issue and usually have the most severe reactions, just as we cater for people with all types of allergies all of our premises are peanut free

Thoroughly enjoyed the food, we went for the set meal and didn't have any special dietary needs so as a table for 2 we were served our food and drink and out of the place in just over an hour, they don't hang about! I think they probably had a 1.5 hour turnaround on our table but that wasn't made clear to us when we first went in and shown to our table.

The food was delicious … loved that we don’t have to decide on a menu choice. Staff were welcoming and friendly and attentive. We thought it was great value for money - just wished we lived closer so we could visit more often.

first visit for 2 for lunch. Enjoyed the food and experience of tapas. Would recommend all dishes we were served . All were enhanced by delicious flavours. Our meal was at 1.15 and the bar/restaurant was very quiet. Ambience was good.
