Modern in its minimalist use of colour and clean lines, the new So Restaurant near Spitalfields market and Liverpool street station is every bit the contemporary Japanese restaurant. The airy ground floor dining area is a unique mixture of wooden furniture and Yatai bar (Japanese food stall style) tables, and calming greens, creating a warm welcoming atmosphere. Head chef Zu Tanaka's dishes are creative without being fussy, introducing upgraded homely Japanese dishes as well as much loved Japanese dishes with a SO twist. Signature dishes include grilled eel, yakitori chicken cooked over volcanic rocks from Mt Fuji, crunchy pork katsu made with special panko imported from Japan, tempura, fresh sashimi, and maki sushi selection of delicious flavour and texture combinations. A very special and authentic Japanese restaurant hidden away. It was very quiet while we were there with the only other diners there Japanese themselves, which is a reflection of the authenticity and quality of the place. Lovely, kind and attentive staff and a beautiful atmosphere. Food was delicious as well. Highly recommended.

Superb food and service! We will be back 😊 Agedashi Tofu, Lotus chips, black prawn curry, kitsune udon, foie gras on rice with mushroom… we’re all just delicious. Generous portions, great price point and peaceful at weekday lunch.

Had a wonderful delicious Ninja Katsu Curry. Believe it or not - as I was told by the staff - the curry contains the same charcoal powder that ninjas used to carry as an antidote to poison. Which is why the curry is jet black! Great atmosphere and friendly service too, so I'm sure I'll be back.
