For the last 18 years, Joe Hennes and his wife Ellen have been building a family-oriented meeting place for friends to gather at Sloppy Joe's Saloon and Spoon in Hubertus. In December 2020, they purchased this property, and brought the philosophy of food, fun, and laughter from Washington County to Lake Country. They renamed the property Smoke on the Water to reflect the revamped menu which includes a large selection of home-smoked meat items. Open jams, live music, karaoke and fun events are already a regular part of the experience.

And after a decade of the lower level sitting vacant, they just launched "Below Deck," a brand new state of the art banquet facility and live music venue that accommodates about 250 people.

The place is obviously popular, as it was packed. It was chaotic. Everything I had ordered they had ran out of so I had to change my complete order. It was 7:30, so I kind of understand but I also kind of don’t. The dishes came out randomly. It wasn’t terrible, just not a place I’m interested in going to again.

Amazing restaurant, the food was so delicious (Brisket appetizer and plates), drinks were perfect, the waterfront table was just what we needed. Although it was 4th of July and it was busy, David took very good care of us. Answered every question, described each item we asked about and even gave us recommendations. We really enjoyed our time and thank you so much for making this day so wonderful.

We went to celebrate a birthday and noted it on the reservation. There was no acknowledgement or special experience. That’s not our typical experience when celebrating a special occasion when dining out. Kinda bummer. Asked for a lean sandwich and was quite fatty and greasy. More than usual when no special request is made. This hasn’t been my typical experience. Usually it is outstanding which is why I requested to dine there to celebrate my birthday.

Seems like they are still trying to figure things out. The room suddenly filled up just after we sat down. Our waitress had promptly greeted the 4 of us and then took our drink order after seating a large group. she then took other food orders from people who arrived after us and then brought our drinks. When she finally took our order, it was over 30 minutes before we got our food. Part of this was probably because one couple ordered pizza. We had a rack of ribs and a salad. The pizza was good. The salad was good sized and flavorful. The ribs were overcooked and only edible by dipping into the sauce. We will come back to try again to see if they do improve when the kitchen isn't slammed with orders all at once.
