Shanghai 1814 is an exceptional destination restaurant in an iconic listed building in the heart of Southampton. You won’t have experienced anything quite like it. This is where East meets West in a cacophony of flavour, style, colour and vibrancy. Shanghai 1814 is so-called as the owner’s ancestors opened their first restaurant in Shanghai in 1814 – the time of the Qing Dynasty, China’s final imperial dynasty.

This combination of traditional European architecture with exuberant Chinese interior design is dynamic and exciting. Welcome to Shanghai 1814 and enjoy the ultimate dining experience.

Wow-factor interiors are decadent and glamorous, draped in dazzling chandeliers and adorned with cherry blossom. The menus feature contemporary Chinese dishes that are fresh and flavoursome, created by a Chef who previously worked at Michelin-starred Hakkasan in London’s Mayfair.

Parties of over six guests are required to order from our sharing menu on Fridays on Saturdays. For bookings in December we require an order from one of our festive sharing menus. The food was impeccable, drinks were top tier. The service was a bit slow but the vibe in the restaurant was good with amazing decor. Overall, we would return!

We visited the Shanghai Restaurant lastnight, when we first arrived it was very pleasant and was instantly greeted by a nice floral smell which was nice! Very welcoming staff.. however we felt slightly rushed and uncomfortable. It felt like we had to order straight away and the staff were overly attentive. As much as we had a lovely polite waitress see to us, it was over bearing as we felt whilst eating and drinking she kept coming over. We understand that staff are trained to be attentive like this, but they need to be told somewhat that it can be abit too much. We are the types of people that basically just want to eat and kind of get on with it, without having to keep talking. So that part was abit uncomfortable in that sense. I ordered a lobster for my main dinner but I was quite disappointed and unsatisfied with the little amount of meat that was in it. At £88 I was very unhappy with that. But the drinks were absolutely amazing and very well presented!! Sadly we felt the music in the background didn’t really match the ambiance and did feel like we were in a nightclub towards the end of our meal. I would have chosen some kind of calming and relaxing music for this, but It did feel abit loud and rushy with that repetitive club music whilst eating. Apart from that we had a nice and pleasant experience but wouldn’t want to go back for food, but definitely drinks in the near future.

Absolutely amazing, this was a engagement celebration meal. We loved it that much we want to have our engagement party here.

Best Chinese we have ever been to but a bit pricey,service and ombience excellent and they provide you with an insulated doggy bag if you don’t Finnish all of your meal….
