‘Great British food in a striking riverside mill’

A true hidden gem, Sculthorpe Mill is a breath taking pub buried in the heart of the glorious Norfolk countryside built atop the River Wensum. Originally a watermill dating back to 1757, it has been lovingly restored by sisters Siobhan and Caitriona Peyton and they have created a haven for foodies and pub lovers alike, as well as one of the best pub gardens in Norfolk. This is a stunning contemporary dining pub, complete with chic bedrooms and a menu of expertly crafted modern British dishes.

Sculthorpe Mill’s seasonal menu changes regularly to make the most of Norfolk’s bountiful produce and all our core ingredients are locally sourced, foraged from land and sea before being passionately turned into award-winning dishes.

Come spring and summer, our garden is the ideal pace to enjoy an evening meal alfresco, or even just a crisp glass of rosé as you listen to the rush of the river or the buzzing of bees in the flower garden.

What a lovely lunch. The location was stunning, we had the most delicious lunch, the star being a shared whole chicken, with the bread sauce, and we even took some home. Staff were so nice, attentive and helpful. Just a lovely afternoon, so pleased we went, it really is a gem.

We had a very pleasant drink in the lovely garden and decided to go straight into mains allowing room for dessert The main courses were very good indeed especially the hake and lamb Unfortunately our meal was interrupted by the arrival of a large group of young people who were very noisy entirely ignoring the others in the room We decided to move to another area and from then on were entirely ignored by the staff and not asked if we wanted to dessert or coffee We were offered a small reduction on the bill but it was a very disappointing end to what started so well

A spectacular Sunday lunch ! The sea bream served in a shell fish reduction with saffron potatoes was like being kissed by the oceans and gave a nod to the French bouillabaisse … wonderful food, very attentive service and a great wine list by the glass.

We were shown to our seat at 7pm and our order was taken. We then attempted to get the attention of the waiting staff for almost an hour to order a drink. Shortly after 8pm our meal arrived. I am diabetic and this was getting to be a bit long to wait. No one came to ask if we were ok or tell us that our meal would arrive soon. We both ordered the lamb shoulder for two to share and when asked if we required any sauces I requested mint sauce. That waitress came and went to other tables and my husband requested mint sauce again and it finally arrived half way through our meal. The food was good but we felt we were ignored and it was so difficult to have a nice restful evening. That is only the second time in 40 years that we didn’t leave a tip.
