‘Great British food in a striking riverside mill’

A true hidden gem, Sculthorpe Mill is a breath taking pub buried in the heart of the glorious Norfolk countryside built atop the River Wensum. Originally a watermill dating back to 1757, it has been lovingly restored by sisters Siobhan and Caitriona Peyton and they have created a haven for foodies and pub lovers alike, as well as one of the best pub gardens in Norfolk. This is a stunning contemporary dining pub, complete with chic bedrooms and a menu of expertly crafted modern British dishes.

Sculthorpe Mill’s seasonal menu changes regularly to make the most of Norfolk’s bountiful produce and all our core ingredients are locally sourced, foraged from land and sea before being passionately turned into award-winning dishes.

Come spring and summer, our garden is the ideal pace to enjoy an evening meal alfresco, or even just a crisp glass of rosé as you listen to the rush of the river or the buzzing of bees in the flower garden.

A spectacular Sunday lunch ! The sea bream served in a shell fish reduction with saffron potatoes was like being kissed by the oceans and gave a nod to the French bouillabaisse … wonderful food, very attentive service and a great wine list by the glass.

We were shown to our seat at 7pm and our order was taken. We then attempted to get the attention of the waiting staff for almost an hour to order a drink. Shortly after 8pm our meal arrived. I am diabetic and this was getting to be a bit long to wait. No one came to ask if we were ok or tell us that our meal would arrive soon. We both ordered the lamb shoulder for two to share and when asked if we required any sauces I requested mint sauce. That waitress came and went to other tables and my husband requested mint sauce again and it finally arrived half way through our meal. The food was good but we felt we were ignored and it was so difficult to have a nice restful evening. That is only the second time in 40 years that we didn’t leave a tip.

loverly place and well looked after with our time spent in the pub , service was good and food outstanding . Bar area very welcoming and homely . petty it was raining as the garden looked fantasic .

Found the menu very fussy and unappetising… ended up having a burger….. not really what I fancied but I honestly didn’t like the look of any other dish

Table: In the secondary back dining room. Offered an alternative table to original poked in a corner with a large artificial plant competing for space with one of the seats. Lacking in atmosphere - felt like a back room. A very loud party of 6 already well into their meal. Room eventually full & noise level almost unbearable compared to the hushed tones in the cosy, main dining room which I walked through to go to the toilets. Noise level an issue for quiet conversation with our friends. A poor single diner was sandwiched between the noisy party of 6 & a party of 4. He may have been OK, but he looked very uncomfortable - not an appropriate placement for a single diner. The uninspiring flowers on the table were well past their best, & not an asset to the table decor. Service was polite & efficient. Food: Knickerbocker Glory was huge & delicious - not fine dining! The steak & chips was a hearty portion. The sauce & chips were very nice, but I would rather have had a smaller steak of better quality. It was a good flavour, but a bit too chewy & no, I didn't have it 'well done!' I'm afraid that the last place I ate at recently was The Gunton Arms, & although the steak is more expensive there, it melts in the mouth. This steak was hard work. Overall: It was OK at The Sculthorpe Mill, but I'd only return if I could be seated in the main part of the restaurant. I think that you need to think about your choices on the menu. Some items much better than others. Some of the information I used for guidance on social media needs updating - especially the menu & its price points.
