A true hidden gem, Sculthorpe Mill is a breath taking pub buried in the heart of the glorious Norfolk countryside built atop the River Wensum. Originally a watermill dating back to 1757, it has been lovingly restored by sisters Siobhan and Caitriona Peyton and they have created a haven for foodies and pub lovers alike, as well as one of the best pub gardens in Norfolk. This is a stunning contemporary dining pub, complete with chic bedrooms and a menu of expertly crafted modern British dishes.

Sculthorpe Mill’s seasonal menu changes regularly to make the most of Norfolk’s bountiful produce and all our core ingredients are locally sourced, foraged from land and sea before being passionately turned into award-winning dishes.

Come spring and summer, our garden is the ideal pace to enjoy an evening meal alfresco, or even just a crisp glass of rosé as you listen to the rush of the river or the buzzing of bees in the flower garden.

Car park full on arrival at 6:50, leaving us to park precariously on a grass bank, just hoping the car’s spoiler isn’t too damaged!? Loud music from garden where DJ was playing an eclectic mix of tracks far too loudly for a food destination. Welcome was underwhelming. Good choice of real ale but my empty glass wasn’t cleared away from our table at any point during our meal. Ordered a glass of wine to have with my dinner but had to remind staff of my order and it didn’t arrive until after my starter was finished. A second glass arrived a bit later by a waiter who seemed confused that I had already received my wine. Food was fine and reasonable value. However the whole experience wasn’t what we expected; think Fawlty Towers combined with Glastonbury- maybe we are just out of touch!? Check out the menu and if you like the look of it, you won’t be disappointed with the quality of the ingredients, or the way they have been cooked. The surroundings and the service are another matter and I think are probably a marmite scenario, so half of you will love the place and the other half may be like us, couldn’t wait to pay up and move on, albeit with a satisfied appetite.

6 of us (plus 2 dogs) dined outside during the day. Although helped by the glorious weather, our experience was nevertheless a highly enjoyable one. The food was excellent, the service spot on, and the garden glorious. Whilst none of us can guarantee the weather in the UK, I thoroughly recommend Sculthorpe Meal if you want excellent restaurant quality food, in a wonderful setting.

My second visit and this time for an early weekday evening. Food was wonderful, presentation, flavour and a good choice of menu options. There were some new members of staff being trained but they were attentive and service was good.

The new summer menu is a delight. Fresh local produce with an added twist of flavour at a local favourite that has never let us down. Recommended.o

Service was extremely poor. Table booked days in advance had to wait for 10 for someone to show us to our table (they admitted our table wasn’t ready, even though the restaurant only had only a few tables in). When my husband’s pudding arrived there was no spoon, he asked the waitress if she would bring one, nothing, he asked a waiter for a spoon nothing arrived, finally we got the attention of another waitress and she brought one (10 mins wait). Lattes were awful, Luke warm and we couldn’t taste any coffee. The food was good, a bit pricey but couldn’t fault it. Just the service spoilt our evening (it wasn’t even busy and there was plenty of staff, so no excuse)

Dear Sarah, On reviewing your feedback, it seems your booking was for 6pm and you were seated and had a drink ordered by 5.45pm, 15 minutes before your booking time. It is not unusual that a table is not ready before the time it is booked for and we accommodated your early arrival. I am not sure what more we could have done? I have investigated the issue of the spoon with the team and I can only apologise. There is no excuse, you should have received your spoon when you placed your order. I am very sorry that this spoilt your evening. With regard to the latte, it is the milkiest coffee option and our comes with two espresso shots as standard. If you had let us know you wanted a stronger coffee, of course we would have rectified it there and then. Kind Regards Siobhan Peyton

Outstanding food, service and venue. I have seen a few reviews calling it a hidden gem and it really is.

So noisy a group of two families with very young children in same area as 3 tables of two adults , not a good mix , we could hear each other over the noise , maybe put large table and children I separate areas to tables with two people eating , it spoilt our evening as have been so many times and live it but this time we just had extremely load children , shouting , crying playing games and we came for our anniversary meal :((
