Our Story
The goal – to guarantee a wonderful meal with authentic cuisine and fabulous margaritas, serve over 50 artisanal and ancestral mezcals, and over 100 different types of tequila brands in a vibrant unique atmosphere that boasts excellent service. Ruta Oaxaca Mexican Cuisine opened in Astoria in 2021 with such a wonderful and successful home run that a second location opened in Patchogue in March 2022.

Ruta Oaxaca means “Road to Oaxaca,” a historic state in the southern part of Mexico. Mr. Castillo and his Partners are keenly focused on honoring Oaxacan culinary traditions, whose fame is derived in great part from its many varieties of moles. By legend, these ancient recipes are more than sauces, they are the very focus of the meal. Ruta Oaxaca proudly features four moles, each prepared using the Oaxacan mole recipes that have made the cuisine world famous.

This is one of my favorite places in Patchogue. The food is always incredible, and the service is just as good. Our server Ana was fantastic and as a restaurant manager myself, I always appreciate that. Its always a great experience dining there.

I had the fish with quinoa and arugula which I had had before when it was wonderful. Last night it was hard to find the quinoa among the toasted corn, which was mediocre. It would also be nice if there was some variety in the fish offered. The ceviche was good but the shrimp was overcooked and it was also the same shrimp and squid as I've had before even though it says the chefs choice. Being allergic to meat I eat fish or vegetarian out. Little choice here.

I got the Steak Oaxacaqueno which was delicious and cooked perfectly, and I was very happy with my meal. My wife got the Birria Tacos, which unfortunately were subpar, especially for the price. We’ve had excellent birria before and had heard great things about Ruta Oaxaca, so perhaps our expectations were too high, but the tacos were soggy, and not in the way a birria taco should be, and they were not very flavorful, which I’ve never found in that particular dish. The restaurant was also quite empty when we went, on a Friday night at 8:30pm with perfect weather, we expected it to be bustling, so maybe a sign of the lacking cuisine.

They have the best margarita selection, and each one is tasty and unique, and served in different interesting glasses. Same for the tacos, so delicious and great choices to select from to customize a plate of 3…seems like endless combinations. Love the happy hour (great value) and Taco Tuesdays! Staff are very friendly and attentive. The more I visit, the more i look forward to my next visit. Thank you, Ruta Oaxaca team!

Went here for a meal before a show at the Patchogue Theatre. I had the Pechuga & Mole Verde and it was outstanding! The service was good and attentive. Flan for desert was excellent and topped off a surprisingly good meal at this traditional Mexican restaurant. HIGHLY recommended!
