Our Story The goal – to guarantee a wonderful meal with authentic cuisine and fabulous margaritas, serve over 50 artisanal and ancestral mezcals, and over 100 different types of tequila brands in a vibrant unique atmosphere that boasts excellent service. Ruta Oaxaca Mexican Cuisine opened in Astoria in 2021 with such a wonderful and successful home run that a second location opened in Patchogue in March 2022. Ruta Oaxaca means “Road to Oaxaca,” a historic state in the southern part of Mexico. Mr. Castillo and his Partners are keenly focused on honoring Oaxacan culinary traditions, whose fame is derived in great part from its many varieties of moles. By legend, these ancient recipes are more than sauces, they are the very focus of the meal. Ruta Oaxaca proudly features four moles, each prepared using the Oaxacan mole recipes that have made the cuisine world famous. Server put me at a table that was wet, it took for ever to get a glass of water and for the waiter to come over to our table. Took a while to come out as well. Chicken tacos were dry. The drinks were good though.

Our group of 6 all loved every appetizer and entree. Ceviche, octopus, ribs, tacos, and enchiladas were all a hit! So was the margarita "tree." We appreciate the thoughtful service and will be returning soon. I'm happy I got to introduce my friends to Ruta Oaxaca (including the toddler who enjoyed bites of almost all the meals and the sauces). I also have to mention I loved the new menu and I appreciate the gluten-free options/labels.

Great spot. My 2nd time there and had another amazing time. Food so so good. We had the Al pastor tacos, shrimp tacos and the vegi tacos and the ceviche , all in the happy hour menu. And a couple of their margaritas, also on happy hour. But the shinning star was our bartender Alex (I think that was his name) , he was incredible. Very knowledgeable about his craft and he exudes exemplary service. I have worked in the industry for over 20 years and I could not have been better taken care of. Can’t wait to go back.

I think the drinks, cocktails and appetizers were the best part of my time here. The main dish wasn't cooked well. I ordered the octopus. And presentation wise it looked gorgeous. But there were parts that were uncooked. Some parts were overcooked. They had many drink options though. Good music. And the bar was packed.
