At first glance, you might think the name of Rouj Creole is misspelled. Besides “rouj” instead of “roux,” a quick scan of the new restaurant’s menu shows the word “gonbo” where you’d expect to find “gumbo.”

But owner Stephen Hightower isn’t a bad speller. He’s just bringing Baton Rouge a taste of Creole cuisine—complete with the authentic Haitian Creole spelling of traditional dishes.

The sensation salad was delicious but the debris poboy was dry, tough and there was no gravy. The staff is always friendly and our server was attentive. Of course, I will return but the debris poboy is a no go for me in the future.

But other than that, everything was excellent and the mussels were so tender!

                                                                                                                      To be honest, my wife went to this restaurant when they first opened and said the food was poor, too much butter, overpriced poor quality fish. We decided to try it some years later when family was visiting. It was empty and when we sat down and viewed the menu we decided to leave. The choices were not what one would expect in a S. Louisiana restaurant. Check the menu online before hand. To the owners, you will likely not make it since Pear Oyster is right around the corner and doing good business. There are too many of these types of restaurants in Baton Rouge and if your food is mediocre at best you're not going to make it.

                                                                                                                      Another fantastic evening at Rouj with a first time guest along. First of all service is one of the best in Baton Rouge! Marcus is a wonderful, attentive and professional server. That has been missing in many restaurants around town. Not at Rouj Creole! The food and wine were perfect. I had my favorite, Peri Peri Quail with a sensation salad. My guest enjoyed the crab cakes as well as the Tiger Shrimp. They always have a bottle of my favorite, Blue Eyed Boy on hand! I love Rouj Creole!
