Located in the historic Fulton Market district of Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, Rose Mary is Chef/Owner Joe Flamm’s debut restaurant inspired by his Italian heritage and the bold, bright flavors of Croatian cuisine. The boisterous space—named for Flamm’s grandmothers, Mary and Mary Rose, and the herb rosemary, which grows natively along the Italian and Croatian coastlines—offers a seasonal menu of rustic yet refined dishes that encapsulate what Flamm has coined “Adriatic drinking food”.

    We sat at the chefs table and that was pretty cool! The food was good, service was great! But this is a one and done for us. Must try it but go with no expectations.

    The food was not as flavorful as during our first visit. The portions were small especially the branzino. And then in addition to the 10% tax, 20% tip, they’re adding a 4% service charge — into insane. I won’t be going back.

    My wife and I eat here as an early birthday dinner for myself. Our table was ready as soon as we arrived at 7PM and the staff was energetic and friendly. The waiter quickly took cocktail orders (which were good) and we got down to perusing the menu. The waiter was outstanding in explaining some of the uncommon ingredients / terms on the more Croatian side of the menu. We had five courses (+ one free treat): Little Gem Salad - nothing special - nice starter for the meal Crni (squid ink, lobster brodo, confit squid, tarragon) - a risotto that will most definitely go down as one of the top 10 dishes of my dining year -- a tad salty, but spectacular taste Now the two disappointments from the homemade pasta category: Mezzaluna (grilled corn, oyster mushroom, summer truffle, and parmesan) Radiotore 'Cacio e Pepe' I expected the kitchen to sing with these simple Italian dishes. Instead, we got two dishes that tasted heavy and VERY SALTY -- to the extent that I could not even taste the summer truffle, oyster mushroom, or black pepper. Now back to very, very good for dessert- berry crostata and, because it was my birthday dinner, a pistachio gelato with a candle in it. We selected a mid-level Croatian wine and the wine director was quite pleasant when decoding some of the mysterious (to us) grape varietals. Great service, mouth watering food, and an attractive restaurant ... clean vision in the development of the menu, but the execution just was subpar. As I passed the kitchen, the line cooks and their leaders just look like they were overwhelmed. A little more attention to day-to-day details and less focus on opening new concepts would serve the Day Off Group well.

    Good quality food and drinks. We tried the ala norma pasta. Nobody at the table liked and the server admitted it was not a favorite of hers. Would go back and will stick to our favorites.

    Food combinations were clever and exciting, but family style portions were super small and left an overall underwhelming feel. Staff was great!

    The service was amazing. They were very attentive. Loved the open kitchen concept. The food…. It was a bit of a letdown. It was…. Okay. We tried a variety of dishes and found them all to be just ok. The lamb ragú was made with lasagna noodles that were very long and messy and way undercooked. Some might claim they were al dente but it needed like another couple minutes. All sauces were quite acidic and needed some balance. The prosciutto and melon was a nice combination of flavors but the melon was not ripe. My husband enjoyed the squid ink risotto. Meat was cooked well etc. I don’t know, just fell flat for me. Again through… service was great but I would not go back.

    Lively atmosphere. Open dining room with view of kitchen. Really appreciated the separate dairy free menu. Very friendly and efficient service. Small plates were all great for sharing.

    We had a delicious meal and a wonderful server. Zucchini fritters, grilled clams, burrata salad with peaches, lamb and the gnocchi with beef cheeks. So very good.
