Located in the historic Fulton Market district of Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, Rose Mary is Chef/Owner Joe Flamm’s debut restaurant inspired by his Italian heritage and the bold, bright flavors of Croatian cuisine. The boisterous space—named for Flamm’s grandmothers, Mary and Mary Rose, and the herb rosemary, which grows natively along the Italian and Croatian coastlines—offers a seasonal menu of rustic yet refined dishes that encapsulate what Flamm has coined “Adriatic drinking food”.

Great food and ambience was tempered by a server who came off as cold and aloof. Having gone through our first six dishes we ordered and wanted to try a few more, our server appeared frustrated and informed us that there were only two dishes we could add. Not sure if it was due to the fact that they were out of other dishes on the menu OR because we needed to be finished eating soon so the could have our table ready for the next reservation? Apparently there’s a two hour dining limit and we were approaching it. In any event, we never felt welcome by our server during our dinner. On the other hand, Joe Flamm, the owner, and a few others, thanked us as we were walking past the open kitchen on our way out — which was a nice touch. In all, the food was great, our server wasn’t.

All the food was delicious but what was really exceptional was the service...the host, our waiter, the servers and busboys were all pleasant, knowledgeable and efficient. We received clean plates throughout our meal, every dish was explained when it was served and we always received serving utensils with each dish.

Aside from the tuna crudo which was very good, everything else was too heavy, fatty and lacking nuance. We had ten different dishes and really liked only the crudo. The lamb ragu malfedine was decent but also too heavy. All the other dishes were just not good and definitely not worth the hype. And pretty expensive for poor value.

We shared the fried zucchini, the squid-ink risotto, the branzino, and several other items that I can't remember, but all were superb. Excellent (but pricey) wines by the glass.

Food was great and our server was delightful. It was a bit loud and hard to hear my dinner companions but overall, I'll be back. Wish they hadn't taken the green tortellini with truffle from when they opened off the menu.

We are huge top chef fans and Joe did not disappoint with his restaurant. Gnocchi was light and pillowy, with a sauce that melted in your mouth. Cevapi and the house Amaro tasted like our trip to Croatia last year. Service was excellent. Dirty dishes were cleaned right away and water was poured before it was even 1/2 gone.
