Established in 2005, The Refectory Cafe was the first “Green” restaurant on the Duke campus and was located at the Duke Divinity School. The Refectory Cafe focused on social & environmental sustainability, healthy dining and sourcing from local farms.
The award-winning Refectory Cafe was to be a “one-of-a-kind” local farm to table restaurant where omnivores, vegetarians, vegans, plant-based, KETO and gluten-free diets could all happily share a table together in the same facility. Every diet classification could delight in delicious, satisfying, creative food from a common menu, while enjoying the health benefits of consuming nutrient-dense meals devoid of chemical additives – all while practicing social & environmental sustainability.

They no longer accept OpenTable reservations. (I see now that they have a note at the top of their OpenTable page not to use OpenTable.) So we had an issue getting a table. After finally being seated, we ordered our food at the counter. We waited over an hour, knowing they were busy because it was Mother's Day. When we went to check on the food, they'd lost the ticket. We waited another 20 minutes. Food was overall OK though the fish and chips were awful. They did not offer us any discounts or refunds.

At The Refectory there's something for everyone on the menu with their excellent variety of food, drink and dessert choices. Our table of 5 included 3 diners who had never been to The Refectory before and all commented that they were returning to "try everything on the menu". Now that's a compliment. Although we were there on a busy, busy day of Mother's Day and graduation celebrants, the staff was incredibly professional, personable and attentive. The Refectory remains one of my top "go to" restaurants. Keep up the delicious work!

It’s a nice enough place, but the food was a little disappointing. For example, my salad came with no dressing, and since I didn’t have a specific waiter, I had to find someone to help. We also waited a significant amount of time for our food - more than an hour. It was Mother’s Day, but the wait was still a little excessive.

What happened to the black beans on the huevos rancheros? There were hardly any. Tasty overall. Salmon avocado toast was great. Hadn't eaten there at noon for a long time every seat taken so quit noisy. Still one of my favorite neighborhood gems. Eva

We ordered 3 apps, 3 desserts and 4 different entrees. Everything was delicious! We loved all the vegetarian options on the menu - the cauliflower piccata was outstanding!

I really wanted to love this place. The people are wonderful, the space is lovely, and the food looks beautiful. The arancini and marinara sauce were delicious. But my “filet mignon” looked and tasted like pot roast. It arrived well done rather than medium, and it just wouldn’t slice right. The gravy it came in just reinforced the pot roast feel. Very disappointing. The arugula salad was nice, but for $13, I’d like more than four bites of arugula. The strawberries were the best part! Yum! We loved that they brought the dessert tray to us, but the cakes and pies all looked pretty average. The apple pie seemed like a safe bet, and it was good, but why serve it cold? It would be so much better warmed up.
