We are at our heart a pub. This is a place where you can stop for a while, eat delicious food and drink in the atmosphere.

Set in the beautiful village of Grantchester, our picture perfect, thatch roofed pub is a 2 minute walk from The Grantchester Meadows and a lovely 40 minute stroll along The Cam from Cambridge.

We have a family reunion each year and this was the second time we've chosen this venue for a family meal. The service was good, considering how busy the pub was. The food was perfectly cooked however, my only comment would be my starter could have been smaller as quite rich so struggled to eat it all but was lovely.

Menu very limited, would have liked more meat and fish choices, also more vegetarian and rice dishes. Plenty of outside space was wonderful and choice of tables was lovely. However the table we were first shown to was overwhelmed with a disgusting smell from liquid presumably overflowing from blocked drains, which unfortunately ruined the enjoyment of our main meal, which we mentioned on several occasions, and were assured that repairs were in hand. We insisted on moving away from the reek for our desserts and had a lovely table in the garden. Staff were polite friendly and timely on the whole. Would visit again if menu was made more comprehensive and plumbing problems were resolved. A discount/refund for the inevitable spoiling of our dining experience would be appreciated, as our senses of smell and therefore taste were obviously negatively impacted.

Really disappointed, we were forgotten a lot and had to ask for things over and over. The service was included in the bill which was frustrating as although the staff were really nice, they forgot a lot. The food was not great either, pork was not seasoned well and was way too fatty. Expensive mediocre meal overall.

Very basic pub food. We had the burger and chicken Kiev, unfortunately neither was very good.

What's not to love? Great ambience, super friendly staff and good food. And reasonable prices on top of all that. We had a great time and, if the opportunity arises, we will be back.

Lovely setting, wonderful service, good food. (And the well cared for Whymbishe is the best pint I've had for a long time)

Food was good when it arrived and staff were trying their best but the venue had allowed themselves to be far too overbooked on Father’s Day, they were still taking bookings on the day even though the people who were already there weren’t getting served, and couldn’t manage the overload. Waited well over an hour for each course and couldn’t even get a drink plus they’d run out of glasses. Totally appreciate this is a busy day but this was excessive and would not have happened if the booking intake had been more reasonable.

Unfortunately I think the restaurant was overbooked and the waitresses were running around all over the place. The service was very slow due to overbooking. It's a shame we had to leave before our desserts were served due to the absolute chaos in the restaurant

This was our first visit to the Red Lion in a while . Although it's a lovely pub in a great location this time we felt let down by the service. Unfortunately the wrong meal was brought out for my husband and then he had a nearly 15 minute wait to receive what he'd ordered by which time the rest of our party had almost finished theirs. Would this put us off going back , no it won't but it was disappointing and we felt the apology from the waiting staff was a little insincere
