Daniele Conterno considers himself a very lucky boy! He does the job he loves and is supported by his large beautiful family in one of the most perfect places in the world. He represents the fourth generation of producers. Starting with Great Grandfather Pietro Conterno and 18 hectares of land. The land passed to his Grandfather Giacomo. Then to his father Franco who he still works with everyday. The only thing better than his life are his wines. Tasting Menu: Langhe Nascetta $26.60 Vibrant yellow with green undertones; rich aroma with hints of pineapple, orange blossom, exotic fruits, banana and honey. Excellent as an aperitif, with whitefish and shellfish dishes. Barbera d'Alba Superiore $25.60 Crushed flowers and bright red purplish fruit give the Barbera it’s effusive, charming personality. Currant, sour black cherry and plum bouquet on a spicy background. Structured and complex with pleasant woddy notes. Nebbiolo d'Alba $24.60 Brilliant ruby red in color with soft orange around the rim. Delicate floral aroma with hints of leather and raspberry. Rich, round flavors and complex tannins. Barolo $50.60 92 points Wine Enthusiast. Pale ruby color, silky and smooth with juicy, crisp and tangy dried berries and roses. Firmly acidic, refined and elegant with a long finish. My good friend Ellie and I were talking trying to decide what wines or theme we should explore. She is working with a new book and mentioned she needed to explore the new book she is working with so we decided to go big! These are some big, bold and beautiful wines. Just the kind of wines we go big game hunting for. Tasting Menu: Castello di Montepo Sassoalloro "Oro" by Jacopo Biondi-Santi 2020 $69.60 The aroma of wine is fresh, fruity, full-bodied, with notes of black currant, plum, cherry and expressive nuances of sweet violets. On the palate, soft and silky, elegant, with fruity tones and a long aftertaste. Alberto Voerzio Barolo "Castagni" 2018 $79.60 Ripe wild strawberries and black truffles on the nose, together with some rose-like florals and a hint of fruity vanilla. Medium-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins and a compact, focused finish. The essential ingredients are enticing, but this needs plenty of time to unravel. Clos Moador Priorat "Manyetes" 2020 $126.60 97 points Wine Advocate. The final result is staggering - a harmonious blend of these noble grapes is completely at one with the terroir and gives us a wine with minerality, femininity, subtlety and complexity which warms our hearts. Philip Togni Estate Cabernet 2018 $129.60 Taking lots of air to show at its best, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a brilliant, classic, age-worthy wine from this great estate. It certainly shows the more structured, vibrant style of the 2018 vintage with lively acids, yet it has utterly classic Cabernet crème de cassis and almost blue fruits as well as Bordeaux-like notes of lead pencil, cedarwood, tobacco, and assorted floral nuances. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it brings rock-solid intensity, perfectly ripe yet building, firm tannins, and again, the vintage's freshness, purity, and elegance. It reminds me of a top Saint-Julien and classic, old school, structured Cabernet that will reward bottle age. This is going to be a very popular experience so please reserve your space quickly. Come find your new favorite wine and have the vineyard owner sign a bottle for you! ‘23 Withers Rose, El Dorado $22.60 This Bandol-inspired The Withers El Dorado Rose is a beauty, featuring aromas and flavors of citrus and stone fruits, highlighted by cherry, watermelon rind, grapefruit, nectarine and peach flavors. The Wine has firm balancing acidity and both inviting aromas and a long finish on the palate. ‘21 Peters Vineyard Chardonnay $35.60 The Withers Peters Vineyard Chardonnay is a beautiful Chablis and Puligny Montrachet inspired Chardonnay reveals its citrus, saline and mineral laden aromatic and flavor profile from the moment the wine hits the glass. It has penetrating flavors and acidity and is the perfect food pairing wine due to its strong backbone. It will develop for years to come but is irresistible now. ‘20 English Hill Pinot Noir $46.60 The 2020 English Hill Pinot jumps out of the glass with inviting savory and sweet aromas and then massages the palate with airiness that unfolds, showing notes of underbrush, savory and baking spices, earth, and dried tea and herbs. The small berries contribute a higher skin to pulp ratio, which gives this lovely and unique wine an ethereal feel yet has deceiving power due to its high acidity. It will age effortlessly for 10-15 years. ‘18 Charles Vineyard Pinot Noir $51.60 This gorgeous Pommard clone based Pinot features liqueur-like bing cherry notes and fine grained tannins. Lovely now, this medium bodied beauty has a strong core that will enable it to improve with bottle age. High toned aromas of underbrush, herbs, chocolate and anise flavors emerge with exposure to air. ‘18 Grenache El Dorado $37.60 This Southern Rhône inspired wine aspires to the more ethereal, mineral laden side of Chateauneuf du Pape. It offers delicate aromas of roasted red fruits and coats the palate with warm sunshine, perfect balance and a medium body that will bring much joy and further reward with cellar aging.
