WE TOOK A LITTLE HISTORY FROM THE AREA WHEN NAMING AND DESIGNING THE RESTAURANT AFTER THE SANDY HOOK PROVING GROUNDS. ESTABLISHED IN 1874, IT BECAME THE FIRST US ARMY PROVING GROUND TO TEST ARTILLERY AND OTHER MATERIALS. AND THAT’S WHAT WE ARE ALL ABOUT – TESTING NEW MENU ITEMS AND SPECIALIZING IN THE NEWEST CRAFT BEER AND COCKTAILS. I went to Proving Ground for dinner with my wife on date night. The location and views were very nice and the service was excellent. We were disappointed that the vegetables were not more cooked, but everything was flavored well. I did not rate the restaurant higher because of the sound level. The normal background noise was fairly high, but they had a band outside and while they were playing, we just could not hear each other at all. To be fair, we are in our low 60’s and our hearing is aging along with us, which I am sure did not help the situation. My wife’s filet mignon was cooked well and tender and my Cobb salad was tasty.

Ma’am, I guess we had chicken wings we had brew burgers and some drinks. I highly suggest the brew burger. It’s really really really good.

The food was great and the windows seats were perfect. We had requested deck seating g but the music was really loud, so we went upstairs. At the windows, we could hear the music but it was better for conversation. Our only issue was with the gluten free menu. Even after declaring one of our party has celiac disease and needs gluten free, the gluten free menu wasn't offered until after the wrong thing came. Somehow the fact that bread crumbs have gluten from the bread was missed by the staff. She ended up with bacon wrapped scallops, which were delicious. The atmosphere is very nice there.

Outdoor patio was beautiful. Server was very pleasant but food was mediocre. Steak frites was very tough with minimal truffle butter, I couldn’t taste it at all. My husbands steak sandwich was also very tough and he has to take it off the bread. You’re better off going for an appetizer, drinks and the view.

Wonderful water views on the outside deck matched with a broad and delicious menu, great service and drinks. Nina was a terrific server!

I had made reservations for 6 in plenty of time and there were so many slots open so I know it wasn’t busy at the time I booked it, however when we got there we ended up on a round table and it was too cluttered along with a stroller. We go there often but were pretty disappointed in the organization.

We had Sara for our server, she was very attentive to our table and was very friendly. Never had issues with our food, as we frequent there many times. Infact all servers are great there. I highly recommend going to Proving Ground it’s on the water and has great views and food.
