Poppies in Hanbury Street was Pop’s first restaurant and the one where the journey began. The retro-diner and takeaway is close to Pop’s heart as it brought 70year old Pat out of retirement. It fulfilled his lifelong dream of opening an East End chippie and a desire to offer customers a taste of the old East End.

    All of us had medium Cod and chips, mushy peas and a gherkin, very tasty, came up quickly staff are lovely

    A great restaurant with good 50s decor. Food choice was excellent and all food delicious. It was a little pricey for the portion size and price of extras was high. Wine too was expensive. However, service was very good and staff were knowledgeable.

    Was referred by a cab driver. It was good but I have had food just as good at other spots. This is more of an iconic place to say you’ve been there. If that’s your thing, go. If you’re not in the area I would not make a special trip for it.

    Fish melts in the mouth, whist the batter is perfectly crispy. My plate showed no signs of grease and the only thing left was my used lemon quarter.

    Even though we had a reservation, they made us wait. After we finished our meal, the bill came to 41 pounds, with an optional 7-pound tip included. I didn't give a tip because it was optional. Despite the fact that the staff did nothing and made us wait as if there was no reservation (there were empty tables in the restaurant), the waiter shamelessly shouted at me, asking why I didn't leave a tip after looking at the bill I paid. If my spouse wasn't with me, I would have cursed and left. In conclusion, don't go to such shameless places.

    Great service and excellent ambience.....Halibut excellent too but lemon sole not to be recommended... flesh was powdery and without taste. Will order differently next time

    Poppies is renowned for Fish and Chips. There is an extensive menu of different types of fish to have. Portions are small for the price. Fish was very fresh though and tasty. Service was attentive.
