Winner of the UK's Best Independent Restaurant of the Year, 2014. Pat 'Pops' Newland has been serving authentic British fish and chips in London since 1945, and from this he has recreated a restaurant serving one of Britain's best-loved dishes in a friendly setting, surrounded by authentic 1940s/50s memorabilia lovingly curated by Pops himself. Our menu includes sustainably-caught mouth-watering fresh fish cooked in crunchy batter, served with golden chips and classic mushy peas, prepared on the premises by our onsite fishmonger. You can also try the seafood platter, pies, chicken, or traditional east end classics like jellied eels, followed by traditional, indulgent English desserts such as sticky toffee pudding and apple pie. Drinks vary from fruit juices and traditional ginger ale, to carefully-picked wines and locally-sourced beers.

I love skate and chips which few places do these days. Poppies do and it was delicious!

For absolutely the best fish and chips in London, this is the place. If possible, try both types of fish. Loved the tartar sauce jars.

Great piece of fish (cod) as our main but felt the starter portions were small. Service teetered between attentive and intrusive. Food was good but felt it was overpriced.

Our family and I went to have lunch there a d que had to put off our reservation for thirty minutes because we couldnt make It on time. The staff was very understanding and changed the time straight away. This gave us the opportunity to enjoy a remarkable fish and chips ( we ordered cod and hake, two of each to try both ) and we must say that rhe fish was quite fresh and tasty as well as crispy, the same applies to the chips. The amount of food was enough for two adults and two kids aged ten and eleven. After the meal the waiter gave us several candies and that left US with a sweet taste in our mourhs. To sum up, we had a really good time there and we Will definitely rcommend It to anyone.

All five in our party loved our meals, which is rare. The fish was delicious, as were the mushy peas and sticky toffee pudding (even better than the pudding we had the next night at a popular pub).

I read about Poppies and it was featured on an American TV show called A taste of London. We decided to go to an authentic “chippy,” instead of ordering fish and chips in a pub. We’ve been in London a couple of times and we are aware of the service charges and vat tax, etc.. The fish was ok, and the fries were merely average. At least we knew the fish was very fresh. The disappointment set in when we were suggested by our server to order a side. Typically in the US, when you select aside, there is no additional fee. We each ordered the mushy peas per her suggestion. It was unknown to us that they were an additional, £3.50. They were inedible. We each left them with the spoons still sitting in a big bowl of gray/green peas. I believe we were some of the last diners to enter and order the restaurant as as we left after having only been there about 30 minutes, the closed sign was on the door. These peas clearly must’ve sat somewhere all day long. Final bill: £31.50 each for this meal. We had added a half pint of beer since it was so close in price to other beverage prices. It the most disappointing evening and meal of all of our London dining experiences. We have eaten at Rules and Manzis, where the prices are only SLIGHTLY higher, but you definitely receive value, and quality at both. I will never recommend my American friends to go to a Poppies. I understand that the owners may say “oh well, they’ll never be back.” But with my son living in London, I will definitely be back, several times a year.

Wonderful service at Poppies, my reserved table was ready, I was greeted and ushered to the table. Service was efficient too. Lovely Haddock and chips, many thanks

The waiter was very rude. Forgot my drink. Had to ask for it again when the food arrived. Appeared to ignore our table. Had to work extra hard to get his attention.

It was OK, fish was ok fries (chips) were good. Sat in a busy place with screaming kids next table over and the waitress was too busy to attend properly for the pounds spent. But apparently it’s the best London’s got going for sit down fish & chips. It was an acceptable experience but one we would pass on repeating if given a choice.
