Poppie’s is renowned for authenticity – and it’s little wonder, with born and bred
East-end proprietor, Pat ‘Pop’ Newland, at the helm. Pop’s career in the fish and chip business started in 1952 when, aged 11, he got a job on Roman Road cutting up copies of The Daily Mirror to wrap fish and chips in. With decades of experience behind him, ‘Pop’ founded Poppie’s. The shops are filled with retro memorabilia from Pop’s childhood, The uniforms channel a 1950s vibe, and the music is tailored to each shop. Dining in one of Pops restaurants is an experience with retro vibes and iconic looks from the decades. For instance, Seventies Formica and Anaglypta wallpaper will be just one of many pieces of kitsch decor on show.

    Our servers were brilliant. The fish and chips were not quite of the quality I had expected. The chips were not crunch enough and the fish was just OK.

    The fish was ok, the fries a bit hard. Unfortunately not all of the cuttlery was clean.

    Nice lunch, but out of a lot of fish choices (no cod, no plaice)-maybe because if was Monday? Quick service and hot food. ) Haddock & chips were tasty.

    Used to enjoy this place, have returned having missed there for couple of years and has got much worse. The large portion of fish was actually very thin, chips and mushed peas questionable at best and the prices have gotten ridiculous frankly. £22 for a fish & chips, not justified either by quality or size. Ambience is still cool and service is friendly, no complain on that side but will not return unless they change their value proposition.

    Went during the week and the restaurant did get busy, but the service was amazing and fast and the food was even better. Poppies is a cosy diner with nice window seats and friendly staff - I can see why it's so popular!

    The food quality has definitely changed since Covid happened. Also the portion sizes are not value for money at all, I had about 8 chips on my plate which was really disappointing. Overall I would not be back in a hurry!

    Bella serata davvero! Noi ci siamo stati a cena di venerdì sera e c'era musica dal vivo jazz con anche balletto di tip tap! Abbiamo mangiato il caratteristico fish and chips che è stato molto buono. Unica pecca: parecchie varietà di pesce presenti sul menù mancavano... Spero sia stato un caso isolato! Ci torneremo!

    Un peu déçue par le peu de quantité des assiettes. La sauce est servie dans un tout petit pot à confiture et si on en veut d'autres, il faut payer en plus. C'était bon mais sans plus. Heureusement le personnel edt agréable.
