Fifty eight years ago, Elaine and Pierre Boissiere established their eponymous restaurant at its current location, years before Carmel Plaza shopping center was built around it. They sought to offer the city of Carmel-by-the-Sea a relaxing and comforting venue modeled after a European chateau where tables are thoughtfully spaced and fresh flowers, fireplace, candles and soothing musical notes are integral part of the dining experience. The ambience sets the tone for French country food served with a great deal of care for detail and pastries baked daily on premises. It is a testament to their far sightedness that Patisserie Boissiere Restaurant continues to fulfill their vision to this day.

Lovely meal and excellent value for largely over-priced, touristy Carmel. Our party of 4 was seated promptly, service was efficient but not rushed and food was exquisite. We shared two appetizers, stuffed mushrooms and a harvest salad. Both were delicious, if not exceptional. For mains, we had the lamb shanks, coquilles St. Jacques, beef bourgignon, and Maple Leaf duck breast prepared two ways. All were excellent. We shared a bottle of Cotes de Rhone that was very good. We were too full to have dessert, but I would definitely return and save room because the desserts in the bakery case in front looked fantastic.

We were visiting Carmel for our anniversary and had dinner here based on the online reviews. They were spot on. Great food and service. We had the lamb shank and the filet mignon. Both were excellent choices. Very tasty along with the potatoes and vegetables. The French onion soup was great as well as the creme brule and strawberry cream puff. Nice wine list with some reasonable bottle prices. Highly recommend.

Everything about our experience was top notch from the beginning to the end. We ordered French onion soup, duck confit, and the lamb shank. If you’re searching for quality French food in an authentic environment, look no further than Patisserie Boissiere.9

Food was good (especially the French Onion soup). However the overall service was sub-par. When we were seated, the server (named Sumintra) greeted us and ask my wife to push her chair in while she was seated. This was a first red flag as I was thinking to myself that there is no table/chair or pathway obstructing the walkway. When asked what we like to drink, we requested ice waters and a cup of hot water. Instead of bring us ice water, we were given room temperature water and I had to ask for glasses of ice. This was the 2nd red flag as I then noticed the same server would bring glasses with ice for their water for other tables without any request. When we were given bread and butter, there were no plates for us to use. She was nowhere to request this until 15 minutes later to get our orders. Whereas I noticed she had provided plates to other tables when bread was served. This was the 3rd red flag. Our appetizers took 30+ minutes to arrive (which was fine but at least she should have come by to let us know or offer us some more water) and when we finished, the server said our entrees would be coming soon (which for me meant in the next 5-10 minutes). But again after 30+ minutes, then the entrees arrived. During the course of our meals, the server did not come by to check if we wanted more waters or how was the food. Instead, I had to reach out to the gentlemen (the one who was serving the wine... maybe he is the owner) to ask for more water. The gentlemen was very courteous and always had a smiling face on him (thank goodness for him being there) On the night of our dining experience, there were 2 servers and 1 gentlemen and a greeter. Everyone except for our server was courteous and attentive. The experience dampened my experience as I was there to celebrate my wife's birthday. If the server was having a bad day, she should not be taking out on us like that as I felt she was a bit biased toward us (even though she was asian herself).

Excellent Beef Bourguinon, best lemon tart I have ever had and the service was terrific. Great place!

Menu that was posted changed when we went to dine. We were trying to eat dinner before the rush arrived. The owner stated they were not offering what was posted for dinner and changed the menu last minute. So no steak and no pork chops. This meant we ate our soup, and then decided to leave and find another restaurant for dinner. Disappointed.

We had a good, not great meal. French Onion soup is very good. My main, a ribeye special, was tasty, but was a bit under (ordered med-rare, and about 2/3s of it were rare). Red wine demi-glace did not have a lot of flavor though. My wife had the bee bourguignon, which had nice tender beef, but the sauce was a bit too tomato-forward. We had a lemon curd tart that was nice and tart tasting, and not overly sweet. The crust though would have been better if lighter and flakier, but the lemon curd filling was really good. I think they (like so many other restaurants) were a bit understaffed, as we had to pour our own refills on water and wine, and we waited forever for our check. We did really enjoy the ambience of the restaurant, it is pretty homey feeling.

We have been dining here for more than 30 years. The staff is great, very friendly. The food has always been great, and the desserts are extra special. The atmosphere is quaint, warm, and comfortable.
