    Gone are the days of Oyamel being a fun and hip new Jose Andres concept. Like many restaurants in DC the food to vale (and margarita to value) relationship has diminished. Despite a relatively empty restaurant, service was somewhat slow (maybe this was more a reflection of the server to table ratio or a slow bar). Food was good. Most value was gained from the specials of the day. It’s not the end of Oyamel for me but it is now less of a treat for me to visit.

    Oyamel impressed on my first visit and depressed on my second. This is a good restaurant, but maybe it had a bad day. Even though I reserved a table weeks in advance, we were placed at a high noise table right at the kitchen entrance. Fortunately the friendly receptionist gave us a better table at our request, but the noise was unabated. The waiters were friendly, but did not listen (or maybe could not properly hear us), and seemed too rushed to help us make food choices or keep an eye on our table. Although the locust taco was interesting, the rest of our food order - fish taco, beef sandwich and chicken sandwich was rather bland and pedestrian. Good thing we were hungry. Too bad the guacamole never arrived, nor did the chili on the side. I am in two minds about going back with friends and definitely won't take clients to Oyamel. Great expectations were dashed and friends from London not impressed. Pity.

    Food was delicious. Waiter was wonderful. Problem is… expensive and very small portions. Tapas is small portions I know, but these prices were high. Shrimp was over $18 for five little shrimp in a bowl with nothing else. Tacos were good.

    If you haven't been to Oyamel in a while, it's time to go back. The management, the bar team, and the kitchen are all on fire right now. This restaurant eats like it's right out of Mexico City, with authentic, artistic, super flavorful dishes. Vegetarians and pescatarians eat as well as carnivores here. Recommending menu items is like choosing your favorite child, but the smoked tuna pescadillas (Minilla Veracruzana), white beans in green mole (Mole Verde de Guerrero), and mushroom tacos (Hongos en Molito), and all of the ceviches are amazing! Bartenders are friendly and super knowledgeable ... whether you just want a good margarita or a curated tasting from a tremendous variety of amazing mezcales, it's effortless. Just go.

    We were looking forward to an amazing meal at Oyamel, but left feeling very disappointed. We ordered the guacamole to start, but our server did not give us chips with the order, even after asking. The margaritas tasted like cheap Jose Cuervo or Margaritaville mixer, just horrible. We ordered the Arrachera Con Salsa Jitomate medium rare and the meat was rubbery and well done. The tacos might have been great, but it was impossible to tell because there was so much salt. Overall, on par with Taco Bell.
