Since the opening of their acclaimed Restaurant Nicholas in 2000, Chef Nicholas Harary and his wife, Melissa, modernized the concept of fine dining. This mainstay of Red Bank garnered some of the industry’s highest praise, including 15 straight years as Zagat’s highest-rated restaurant in New Jersey, a 4-star review in the New York Times, and a position on several national “best restaurant” lists.

Now, with Barrel & Roost, the couple strips off the white tablecloths and serves up a bold new menu: made-from-scratch food that’s crazy-delicious, yet entirely accessible any night of the week.     First time dinner at B&R. Was out on Friday night with my mom who is in her 80’s. Food was great, service slightly less so, but very good. While decor is very appealing the restaurant is extremely loud making it difficult for conversation without yelling which one can tolerate for a bit but not an hour +. I should have asked about quieter seating when I arrived, but didn’t…so that’s on me. There appears to be a dining area off to the side which seemed a bit lower volume which I’ll inquire about next time. I would suggest that if there is quieter seating, you consider offering that option on open table or if there is flexibility in seating, have the hostess ask patrons which seating they prefer. All this said, we’ll give it another try next time I’m up in NJ.

    Great as always! My granddaughter was visiting and we said we can go wherever you want to go for dinner. First choice- Barrel and Roost!!!

    We enjoyed our dinner and will be back. Everything was very fresh and delicious. We enjoyed the casual relaxed vibe and the service was terrific.

    Let’s start with the good: a couple of years ago, Nicolas expanded the parking lot, so we had no trouble finding a spot. We entered the restaurant and were greeted by the hostess who confirmed our reservation, seating us immediately thereafter. After getting settled in, our server came over and took our drink / app order. We ordered 2 of the cider cocktails; which lacked cider and gin, it tasted like ginger ale with muddled mint (which were ingredients to the drink but shouldn’t have overpowered everything else). While I wouldn’t normally nitpick, each drink cost $16. For our app, we chose the crispy bbq ribs - this was the highlight to the evening. The skin of the ribs had a wonderful crunch and the sauce was delicious. The thai radish salad balanced the heartiness of the ribs. Net net - order the ribs and thank me later. Next was our entrees - I got the “Nicholas Burger” (which I’ve had before) and my wife got a small Penne pasta. The burger was an extreme disappointment - the burger patty itself tasted like one of those frozen box burgers that you get from Costco. This part is frustrating because it’s not hard to make a good burger. To add insult to injury - the chips it came with were more of a show piece; not entirely sure if they were intended to be eaten. On the other hand, my wife’s pasta was well made but the portion side was incredibly small (to the point where she left hungry and asked if we could stop for a snack on the way home). In sum - the ambience of Nicholas is beautiful, the service is top notch. I don’t know if it’s a supply chain issue or a management decision to reduce costs/increase profits but, I wish they put as much love into the main courses and drinks as they do the appetizers.
