Mount Macedon's first hotel, The Mountain Inn, was built in 1864 by carpenter William Watson. It was initially located right next door to the Mount Macedon Hotel’s current location. It was later renamed Waterfalls Hotel.
William Watson and his family lived in the original hotel building, where in his retirement he carved creations, known as Watson’s Curiosities, that were displayed in his front garden.
By 1871, the name had changed again, this time to the Oriental Hotel. This was before a new weatherboard building, also named Oriental Hotel, was erected two doors to the south.
In 1931, the Oriental Hotel was destroyed by a fire that began in the kitchen and quickly spread throughout the whole building.
It was rebuilt soon after as the brick building on the same site that stands today as The Mount Macedon Hotel.
At times the hotel has been named Oriental Hotel and Gowings Mount Macedon Hotel before reverting to its original name, Mountain Inn in 1987.

The Mount pub is a magnificent venue. Great service and that old pub charm that’s well maintained. Food was really good, all four of us enjoyed our meals. Awesome views and I highly recommend.

I booked luch for father day and the only sitting left was 2:30pm. It was the biggest mistake that I will not make again. We were seated of to a room off the side called the Oriental Room. The main area was nearly empty with lots of messy tables. We were seated and forgotten. My husband went to ask about ordering drinks, we were told to order at the bar. 10 mins later a waitress came to take our order and we asked about drinks and she said we could order through her. We ordered drinks and were told the kitchen closes at 3pm and we had to get our orders in. Seriously why take a booking at 2:30pm if we only had 30 mins before the kitchen closed. We ordered and and 10 mins later our entree came out followed by our mains. One of the nost disappointing meals I have ever had. My husbands Beef Cheek Bourguignon was over cooked and the outside of the beef had a burnt overcooked and not very pleasing taste. My daughters pizza if you could call it that lacked taste and looked undercooked. My calamari, chips and salad was not good. We were again forgotten until my husband asked for the bill which was sent to our table. We were not asked if we would like tea, coffee or desserts but I guess it was after 3pm. A very disappointing and very average meal. Oh and if you have spiced cider on the menu! Make sure you have enough for all sittings.

You had a busy night, wait on our meal was one hour. The quality of food was good. Value was good to. Staff acknowledged long wait and provided a complimentary beverage each for us. Well done and will return and give positive referral

The pizzas are delicious. Although was expecting more mushrooms on the Delux Mushroom Pizza. Lots of dining areas to choose from, restaurant, bar area or outdoors. Friendly service. Food came out fairly quickly. Definitely recommend.

The meal was fine, ambience was good BUT that front door! We had the long table in from the front door. Good spot except patrons and staff very regularly left the door open on this very cold day. Hard to train patrons to shut doors but staff should automatically close this door on passing. Patrons at my table were regularly walking over to shut the door after other patrons and staff walked by. Disappointing.

Menu was basic, it was a very cold night and the restaurant was very cold inside, heating wasn’t working.

We were seated in room at the back of the hotel which was freezing. The door kept being opened and shut by everyone going in and out and it was being slammed shut. The steak pie was dry. We have decided not to ever go back to that hotel, The menu needs to be looked at and we were talking to some of the bikes that arrived and they were saying the same. There was not enough staff unfortunately, I do understand The lack of hospitality staff but the kitchen could not keep up with the demands. The coffee was terrible also. I am sorry I cannot give this a good rating today. Very disappointed in our trip to the Macedon hotel yesterday.

The food was lovely. The two things I thought could improve is: 1/ The service was really slow and 2/ The fireplace wasn't on and the heating wasn't great as it was quite cool. Most of us had to keep our jackets and coats on for most of the time we were eating.

The 2 vegan fishes were fabulous. Pleasantly surprised at the quality of vegan dishes for a pub. The roasted cauliflower had lots of texture and flavours as did the gnocchi.
