Partners Matt Kelly and Josh “Skinny” DeCarolis are proud to offer Mothers & Sons, a trattoria in downtown Durham featuring regional Italian food with seasonal sensibility. DeCarolis introduces the first restaurant in the South to focus on fatta a mano —handmade pasta.
Mothers and Sons offers antipasti dishes such seasonal bruschettas or smoked octopus. Choose from primi dishes like the bucatini al amatriciana, squid ink tonnarelli or rigatoni alla norma and secondi dishes like the bistecca alla floretina and eggplant parmigiana. Dishes are made with seasonal ingredients so menus may change depending on when you visit. An extensive Italian wine list, dozens of amari as well as an imaginative cocktail list with an italian flair assures there will be a drink that will complement your meal perfectly.

I feel bad giving any restaurant a poor rating but after attending their Valentine’s Day “experience” it feels almost like my responsibility to ensure nobody else has to experience this. My spaghetti was undercooked. My beef was cold by the time it got to my table. Our waitress rushed us to order only to have the first appetizer delayed by nearly 45 minutes. We were brushed aside and treated rudely by the seating staff and had to wait nearly 20 minutes after our reservation for a table. We sat right next to the door which meant there were dozens of couples hovering right over our table waiting for their seat too. Not to mention the frigid air that kept coming in through the door right next to us. If this had cost 20$ a person this would be acceptable quality but it cost well over 100$ per person and booked weeks in advance. We have had far better dining experiences for a quarter of the price in Durham.

We were disappointed. Between the higher price point, the fair food, and the just-under-ambiance.

My husband and I attended their special Valentine’s Day 3-course meal and wine pairing. It was amazing! We both got different courses so we could taste everything. The portions were perfect, not too small or too big. And the wine pairing was a great touch. Highly recommend one of their events for a date night and fun experience.

The setting was a downtown Trattoria. Seating was cozy. Our server Kayla was friendly, knew the menu well and was an excellent server. The wine wine list offered many choices at reasonable price pints. We settled on a Nebiolo. My wife and I shared the Arancini for an appetizer, Pasta Amatriciana and the Porchetta. They we all well done and served hot. We enjoyed ourselves and will definitely back. The only issue is parking. We struggled to find a spot for our 6:00 PM reservation

Waiter was great- from Italy and very helpful. Food wasn’t as good as it has been in the past- pasta alla Norma was really not good (sauce was weird and eggplant undercooked. The seafood pasta was also underwhelming. Won’t be eager to return.

We had a lovely time. Service was wonderful, the wine was great, and the food was top-notch. Only issue was the noise level. The dining room was full when we arrived, it made conversation difficult. As the restaurant emptied out, it was much easier to converse. Would definitely return, the experience is worth the noise level, just need to manage when you dine.

We were seated in the “quiet room” which felt very isolated from the vibe of the main dining room. The room is not the most inviting as part of the area near that bar looked like a storage area, but we opted to stay and hoped for the best. We ordered the Butternut Squash Bruschetta with the onion jam and it arrived almost as soon as we ordered it and before we were able to receive our drinks. The Bruschetta was “okay”. Not the best introduction to the meal and felt as though it was lacking flavor. We also did not enjoy that the bread was not served warm. We asked for an additional side of focaccia bread that also arrived room temperature. The entrees were definitely starting to redeem the experience. We ordered the Eggplant Parmesan (which was tasty but more like a layered bake of pasta sheets and eggplant) and the Cavatelli Pugliesi. The Cavatelli was excellent! A bit spicy but very fresh and was a nice compliment to the Eggplant Parm. I honestly think that had we only had the eggplant we would have left disappointed because there just wasn’t enough dimension in the flavor. I would say you would definitely need a vegetable side dish to break up the monotony of flavor. To wrap it up, we had the Panna Cotta and the Gianduja Budino for dessert. Both were wonderful! I was afraid that the Budino might come off as too rich but it was balanced with the creme on top and is something that I look forward to having in the future. The Panna Cotta was a surprise as it was not listed on the online menu but I would suggest they add it (or a seasonal version of it) to the permanent menu. Overall, a good experience. Unfortunate that it didn’t start off with a bang but ended up leaving us very satisfied in the end. We will likely return but will steer clear of the variety of Bruschetta that we chose and hope that they will consider serving warm bread in the future. It is a small request but definitely enhances the experience and lends to the feeling of freshness.

We had great service and the food was excellent. I had the eggplant Parmesan. It was played like a lasagna which was very filling and delicious. My husband had a pasta dish that was called ink shrimp noodles??? Something like that. It was garlicky and he enjoyed. Highly recommend. The only negative was our seating was at a table in the center of the restaurant beside two other tables so there was not much privacy.
