Partners Matt Kelly and Josh “Skinny” DeCarolis are proud to offer Mothers & Sons, a trattoria in downtown Durham featuring regional Italian food with seasonal sensibility. DeCarolis introduces the first restaurant in the South to focus on fatta a mano —handmade pasta.
Mothers and Sons offers antipasti dishes such seasonal bruschettas or smoked octopus. Choose from primi dishes like the bucatini al amatriciana, squid ink tonnarelli or rigatoni alla norma and secondi dishes like the bistecca alla floretina and eggplant parmigiana. Dishes are made with seasonal ingredients so menus may change depending on when you visit. An extensive Italian wine list, dozens of amari as well as an imaginative cocktail list with an italian flair assures there will be a drink that will complement your meal perfectly.

Great fresh tasting food with excellent flavor! Our server was very helpful in helping us decide what we wanted to eat and wine pairings! I love the light wood burning smell in there also. It made it feel more cozy!

We were a table of 5 (all adult family members) and were promptly seated at our reserved time of 7:15. The waiter was friendly and very efficient. Drinks were ordered and served within minutes. As the restaurant was totally filled, we were surprised the drinks came so quickly. However, we had no trouble with the noise level. My mother was Italian, so I know what excellent Italian food is. The food exceeded my expectations! Everyone oohed and aahed over their choices. Mine was Eggplant Parmesan and I never had better! All of us were impressed with the entire evening. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys a fine Italian meal. We will return often as our granddaughter goes to Duke Fuqua and we live in Chapel Hill.

Very nice meal before a show @DPAC. The eggplant was fantastic as were the beet salad & fritter. Lovely place.

Had booked 2 different Italian places this Friday evening, because I could t decide which to take a chance on. I wish I had chosen differently. We had two antipasti, 2 pastas and a dessert. The burrata and grilled corn bruschetta was pretty good, though the usual grilled bread was more like thin toast points. The anranchini were oozing with cheese but had little other flavor, would have liked more rice actually. The squid ink tonnarelli was decent enough, the uni-based sauce was a bit thin and not as rich as described. The biggest disappointment was the cacio e pepe - so salty it burned my tongue. Couldn't finish it. And the gianduja budino was a pot of firm and slightly grainy ganache I suspect had spent a bit longer in the fridge than it should have. Has really hoped for an elevated Italian expericex sadly Mothers and Sons did not deliver.

We had the beet, peach, prosciutto and ricotta appetizer which was divine. Then we had gnocchi which was so fluffy and flavorful. The squid ink dish with uni and shrimp has excellent flavors as well. Cocktails weee fabulous and so was the service.

Delicious, as always! I was especially grateful that the staff were so very gracious about the fact that my companion and I did not order alcohol, shared two apps and one entree between us, and didn't order dessert. We are in our late 60s and have to be careful about our diets. In addition, we had a homemade birthday pie and ice cream waiting at home. The server brought us two large plates, serving spoons, and sharp knives, which made sharing very easy. At one point my partner dropped a knife onto his white trousers and thence to the floor. The hostess quietly provided a clean knife and one of the servers offered soda water, which removed the tomato sauce stain. A bus boy replenished our water glasses frequently. I waited tables for a while in my youth and well remember how much we valued customers who ran up their bills with cocktails, wine, and brandy. It meant a great deal to be treated with such respect despite our modest order.
