The name refers to the ancient Mexican monarchy honouring the influence both his parents made on his culinary style. While his mother inspired our sister restaurant, Ophelia, the familial tradition has continued here at Monarca where you’ll find playful dishes and a lively atmosphere inspired by Chef Higareda’s father.

Francisco’s father lived near the famous Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in central Mexico’s Michoacán region. Chef Higareda spent several summers here with his family enjoying the local Tlahualiles (defeated warriors) Festival. The festival celebrates the feast of Santiago Apóstol, patron saint of Sahuayo. The battle depicted in the festival is still debated today in Mexico and refers to military conflicts before, during, and after the arrival of the Spanish. It’s a memory he cherishes from his childhood.

    The server was very nice, and was truly amazing and patience, he really worked hard and did his best. Due to being under staff on a Saturday night it was hard to manage many tables at the same time. They also have a trainee(bartender) on the first hot day of summer, on a saturday. Took 35-40 minutes to get our first drink or even water, We stepped outside and asked 2 servers not to remove anything from our table, our food and drinks were untouched and on the table. When we came back it was all gone. They took some food off the bill but doesn’t changed the fact that the quality of our night changed, and we ended up leaving in middle of our dinner. They said they had a Dj and they didn’t. Overall the first days they opened I really enjoyed it, because Vancouver lacks that kind of ambience where in there is good music along with food and drinks, but now they are careless and rude specially the hostess. You can’t order too many drinks, or add people to your table when it’s clearly dead and it’s so easy to make the costumers happy. They are not flexible at all. it seems like Management team doesn’t want to make money nor satisfy the costumers. Overall I’ve been going there only for the Dj, which they never have anymore, and lie about having a Dj till the absolute last minute on a Saturday where everything else is already booked up. I had high hopes for this place, but super disappointed now.

    Small portion, expensive for what you get, service is okay, take a bit long, have to wait for drinks and overall I don't think I would come back.

    Best Mexican food I have ever eaten. Maria was our server and she was beyond attentive and nice. The rest of the team was excellent as well. Most try!!!!

    Food is very mediocre. Way better Mexican food elsewhere. Sister restaurant Ophelia has much better food. Seating near washrooms is very unfortunate as well.

    Witress are vey friendly, kind and always around to help. Maria was incredibly nice and attentive to us. Would definitely come back and recommend it.

    This was our second dinner here about a year later. The food wasn’t as good, the pork dish was very heavy and one note, it really needed some acid or greens. The drinks were okay, I make a much better margarita and this is a Mexican restaurant?

    Will, the waiter, is awesome. He upgraded our diner to a different level. His confidence about the menu encourages us to try different courses!! 😋

    This hidden gem was such a nice surprise for us. Had we known this place existed two years ago, we would have been here every other week. The service was amazing and personable, making us feel right at home with their attentiveness. We ordered the Enchiladas Gratinadas, Cabbage a las brasas, Los de rib eye, Enchiladas Blancas, Grilled 16oz ribeye, and churros. Each dish was packed with unbelievable flavors that complimented each other so nicely. The cabbage was a standout surprise, stealing the show from the other plates. The sauces complimented each dish, further elevating each one to another level. Despite being stuffed, we finished all the dishes because they were so good. If you haven't tried this phenomenal restaurant yet, you should. You won't be sorry, and the prices are so reasonable for the portions.
