I recently visited Mexican Sugar and had a mixed experience. The check-in process was smooth and efficient, with two staff members ready to assist. Our server, Thomas, was friendly and welcoming, making sure we didn't over-order as newcomers. The highlight of our meal was the carne asada fajitas, which were flavorful and cooked to perfection. The chips and salsa were great—the chips were warm and salty to our liking, and the salsa was not cold but had a smoky chipotle flavor. The ceviche was good too, fresh and nothing to complain about. However, the paella was a disappointment. Two out of six mussels were clearly bad, leaving a lingering off-taste in our mouths. We addressed this with Thomas, and he said he would let the kitchen and his manager know. Hopefully, the next customer does not experience this issue. If we hadn't encountered this problem, I would probably give my rating a 4 or 5. The ambiance was nice but quite dark, making it difficult to read the menu without using our phones, just like other patrons. Overall, while the service and some dishes were commendable, the issue with the mussels in the paella significantly affected our dining experience. I hope this can be addressed for future patrons.

Our first time at Mexican Sugar. We made a reservation, because we heard it was a hot spot. The food was excellent and we will definitely be coming back. Our severs name was David and he was so very attentive & made great suggestions. We highly recommend this spot for drinks and\or food. You won’t be disappointed.

Dark, loud, uncomfortable seating, way below average food taste, slow service from waiter and just a waste of carbs! Lol. I will personally never go back. Too many good restaurants to choose from in Houston to waste time and money at this one. We were seated quick enough even though it was Valentine’s Day. It was just the rest of what I mentioned that sucked! Which is pretty much everything.

Prompt seating. Server was very attentive and provided amazing service. Plenty to choose from on the menu and the quality was great. Good value for dishes in the area. Would recommend to friends and family.

Our waiter was not very good. He was not up to par. He may be better suited for a much slower restaurant.

Food was excellent, drinks were good, but service was subpar. Definitely recommend the pescado tacos. The chupa, machete, and hibiscus margaritas were quite good as well and were included in their happy hour pricing. The churros were also very light and crispy and was a perfect way to end the meal. The only negative part of our experience was our server Andrea, she was attentive to the table next to us but barely checked on us through the whole meal. She didn't even refill our drinks until we were already done eating. Her service soured what was otherwise a nice dinner.
