Metropolis by Marcus Samuelsson is a vibrant contemporary American restaurant from Marcus Samuelsson within the Perelman Performing Arts Center. Metropolis is the culinary anchor of this new cultural cornerstone of Lower Manhattan and is honored to play a role in the final chapter of rebuilding the World Trade Center site. Its menu explores the rich culinary traditions of New York City through a modern lens with theatrical cocktails, a fun and worldly wine list, and gracious hospitality. Designed by David Rockwell, Metropolis features a dazzling yet warmly inviting dining room and a bustling bar, a landscaped outdoor terrace, and a lobby lounge featuring free-to-the-public artistic programming.

Party of 2 before a Weds matinee show. Ordered a martini and a show-themed specialty drink and two appetizers. Server talked us into a 3rd appetizer. Ordered most expensive main course item (lobster roll) at server’s suggestion and a burger. Drinks were slow to arrive, with appetizers coming out first. Appetizers were all delicious. No complaints. Menu description for lobster roll led me to believe that there would be citrus aioli on the side for the Old Bay fries. When asked server explained that it’s part of lobster roll. I wouldn’t have guessed that. Also, the menu description for the burger didn’t mention cheddar dust on the fries. We’d already had cheddar dust on the Fried Olives appetizer, so that seemed redundant. Ordered and received a 2nd specialty drink. We were surprised that on the server’s next visit, the check was dropped at our table. No offer of coffee or dessert after we were pretty clearly there to spend and enjoy. This was the most disappointing part of the experience. Otherwise ambiance was great, service and food was very good except as noted.

I’ll start with the negative- when I arrived for lunch prior to my companions, the bus boy asked if I would like sparking water or still. I replied that still water was fine. He returned with a bottle and began to pour it before I could say “no, I mean tap water”. He proceeded to argue with me. Me - I meant tap water. BB - you said still Me - tap is still Finally the server came over and told him to just leave the bottle. . The menu was full of typos. “Old By” seasoning on the lobster roll. No, it’s Old Bay. “Avcado” in the salad. No, it’s avocado. I could forgive them missing the accent mark in chèvre were they not to hold themselves out to be a fine dining eatablishment. The fried olives and cornichons were mostly batter. They need bigger olives and pickles. The bread under the gravlax was soggy. My endive, walnut and chèvre salad was arugula, radicchio and radishes. There was no endive that I could find. It was delicious but not what was described in the menu. My husband had the fried chicken. It was delicious but too much breading and not enough meat. The distinguishing characteristic of a good crème brûlée is that is you tap the top with your spoon, the thin layer of caramelized sugar shatters. This did not - it was soft. We ordered two and they only brought one. Overall, it’s a lovely space and the food was pretty good and not exorbitantly priced. Very convenient for a pre-matinee show in the Performing Arts Center in the same building. But not without some inexcusable kinks.

Last night was the third time we had dined at Metropolis. The first two experiences were exceptional, from the food to the server to the support staff. This time, it was just ok. The food was still quite good, but the new summer menu is much more limited than its winter predecessor. You'll enjoy what you get, but expect fewer choices. The service was disappointing. Our server was not well versed in the menu. When we asked him to describe one of the side dishes, he replied, "You get two pieces." When we pressed him, he said he'd have to ask; he either didn't or didn't care. Previously, our other server was thoroughly knowledgeable about the menu, recommended pairings and cocktails to enhance what we had ordered, and seemed genuinely interested in our experience; last night, I felt rushed and, at times, ignored. And don't order the espresso martini, especially if you enjoy them like I do. Total disappointment.

I had Caesar salad and snapper entree and it was Excellent. The staff are very friendly and welcoming.

We loved the opportunity to dine in the space before the show. It would have been nice to know the accessibility options before we arrived (we painfully walked up the stairs before we found out about the elevator). The food was very good, the wait staff was very attentive (without being obnoxious) and all the people we interacted with were very welcoming. Overall, a very night meal in very nice surroundings.

Our pre-theater dinner experience was wonderful. We cannot wait to return. The food was superlative and impeccable. Someone at the next table ordered the fried chicken and we intend to try that next time. But nothing we ordered disappointed and in fact everything was delightful. Warm, professional, and attentive staff. The design of the restaurant is a feast for the eyes. The space is acoustically live and adjoins the PAC lobby that has a performing space in it. If you prefer quiet spaces, dine early as we did. The room was quiet at first but grew louder later.
