Mertens Prime, named a Top 10 restaurant by Grand Rapids Magazine for 2 consecutive years, is a French brasserie and steakhouse set in a historic 1914-built former hotel lobby and dining room that preserves and celebrates Grand Rapids' past. We offer a variety of French classics along with an impressive French-touched steak menu, including Chateaubriand. The Mertens cocktail list is an exact replica of the drinks and menu design from the New Hotel Mertens bar, circa 1939, and includes the same cocktails served in 1939 that are as relevant today as they were 80 years ago.

Mertens Rooftop offers a full bar and a menu of appetizers. To book a reservation at Mertens Rooftop, select "Outdoor Seating", if available.

Merten’s rooftop was amazing! Highly recommend it!! The view is incredible of downtown GR, as the rooftop is on the 9th floor. The food and cocktails were delicious. Very attentive staff. Can’t wait to go back!!! Their restaurant on the main floor of the building is outstanding also. I can’t wait to go in try their new fall menu. The restaurant has historic charm and the food is soooooo good!!

The food was ok. Not worth the $300 (pre tip) we paid. Only 1 alcoholic drink in that $300. There were 4 of us. I don’t have a problem with a $300 bill if it’s amazing food, but other than the steaks ($60 for just steak) the rest of the food was blah. Not a lot of options for gluten free either. Services was AMAZING!

I reserved seating on the rooftop for a bachelorette cocktail hour. What you see in the photos online for this space is NOTHING like the actual location. While the online photos show beautiful cozy seating, area rugs, real plants, umbrella stands, etc..... the REAL location is a basic rooftop with no rugs, no umbrellas (even in 80+ degree weather), no cute seating (just some basic bistro tables). Bistro lights weren't on. No umbrellas to provide shade. Railings were covered in ugly faded plastic greenery vines. The drinks were okay - nothing special. We didn't have food. The service was fine -- nothing special. When we went to walk in the restaurant, the doors were locked and the man at the door acted annoyed we were here, even though we made a reservation (which required a credit card and came with a $20/person fee if we didn't show up or were late). We thought we were going to a special spot for a drink before heading elsewhere for dinner. We thought it would be a fun spot to see the city and take a nice photo of our small group. We were not a rowdy group --- we were hoping for a classy location for our girls' day. Was totally disappointed. Won't be going back.

Food was average at best. Service was ATROCIOUS . The server was more worried about getting the menu off the table instead of the dirty dishes. We waited almost forty minutes for her to bring our bill because she was standing in the kitchen putting on lipstick.. If it was busy and she was overwhelmed, but it wasn't even full. And there were 3 servers on there. There was no reason for it to be that sub bar

This Restaurant definitely does not match what they advertise. If you are viewing the menu before you even step in to Mertens, you have in your mind that you’re going into almost a five star restaurant but this is not the case several people got up and walked out in the middle of their dining experience because Mertens was out of popular bourbons and entrees they wanted to order. The service was deplorable with our first server. The second server our bartender was a delight but she can’t be responsible for the awful food. She tried to give us a pleasant experience. We stayed to give it a chance but we did leave without our dinner. We ordered the shrimp linguine. The pasta was undercooked and was one big bowl of starchy gooey mess. We did re order with caution but when they brought the salad which we could not eat we decided to cut our loss at 9:00 pm and find dinner elsewhere. My friend bought our 2 glasses of wine which sucked 31$. They should have not charged us. This place ruined our evening. We had to look for another restaurant at 9:30 pm. Thank God Leo’s was still serving.

This place has fallen so far. I so enjoyed it when they first opened. The food was amazing and the drinks were absolutely spectacular. The menu is now a fraction of what it used to be and the drink menu is a shell of what it once was. The service is just so slow. I am truly saddens by this.

Service was mediocre and we asked for a bottle of champagne. Got the bill and it was $116. Was not expecting that price tag and wish we would have been been informed prior as it was off menu. Also, there was no toilet paper in the bathroom.

We had amazing service the French Onion soup was amazing Steak and Frites was sub par but over all the service made everything beautiful
