Mertens Prime, named a Top 10 restaurant by Grand Rapids Magazine for 2 consecutive years, is a French brasserie and steakhouse set in a historic 1914-built former hotel lobby and dining room that preserves and celebrates Grand Rapids' past. We offer a variety of French classics along with an impressive French-touched steak menu, including Chateaubriand. The Mertens cocktail list is an exact replica of the drinks and menu design from the New Hotel Mertens bar, circa 1939, and includes the same cocktails served in 1939 that are as relevant today as they were 80 years ago.

Mertens Rooftop offers a full bar and a menu of appetizers. To book a reservation at Mertens Rooftop, select "Outdoor Seating", if available.

The atmosphere was to die for , I thought it was going to be a little more glamorous but it was a perfect rooftop experience. The drinks were very delicious and the food pricing I felt was high for what you received. That was my only complaint. Service was impeccable and they make you feel right at home.

Food was a huge disappointment. We had the Steak Bites and Everything but the Bagel dishes on the rooftop. Price point was way off in terms the quality of the food and the dishes did not come out as described. Effort in service really wasn't noticeable. Great views from the rooftop but other than that, a less than ideal location considering the other great dining options available downtown Grand Rapids.

The Rooftop has a lot of potential, however it needs to up its food game in order to be a place to go back to. The view is wonderful, and there is plenty of seating for couples or groups. I was there with a couple of friends, our first time. The service was sub-par: I had to go back to the bar area to ask for plates and napkins after the food was delivered, and we also had to ask the waiter to come and take our food order after sitting with drinks for 15 minutes. The menu is limited to apps and drinks, which is fine, however the three we chose (spinach dip, pork belly, and cheese plate) were just OK. I was expecting a higher quality at Merten’s. It would also be nice if they offered some NA drinks or at least some type of sparking water for the non-drinkers. All three of us agreed that we would not be returning. It’s a shame, because the venue itself is lovely.

Food was subpar at best. Portion sizes were comical, and the small portions had no if flavor.

We dined on a Sunday evening…maybe the chef was taking a vacation day. Was with a party of 4,my pasta dish arrived cold, my husband’s salmon was so-so, the steak was overdone, the roasted chicken was the only entree that appeared satisfying. This was not the first time dining here for any of us and we all noticed a decline in the food. We spent over $200 and walked out disappointed.

We really wanted this to be a good experience, even with all the recent negative reviews we thought we would give it a shot. The rooftop offered tickets to watch the GR fireworks on 7/6. Tickets were $50 per person and included a drink and dessert each. We arrived and were ushered up to the roof and offered our choice of the seats remaining, the server made sure to point out what direction the fireworks would come from. Unfortunately it was downhill from this point. We ordered our complementary drinks; mine was good however my wife ordered an aperol spritz and that was not what was served best guess was they used Campari or something similar (my suspicion is they had run out which is totally fine but then don’t make the drink). We inquired about the dessert, after telling us she didn’t know anything about it our server said the only thing they have is cheesecake. We took what we could get and it was fine, for sure not what we would have selected off of the published list. Our server came by a total of 3 times in the 2.5 hours that we were there and she struggled to keep up with the other tables around us. A woman sitting next to us ate her cheesecake with a knife since no silverware was offered. The other major issue was the bathroom which was filthy and had no means of drying your hands. Ambience was weak based mostly on the music. It was a mix of 90s hip hop which is fine but certainly does not fit an upscale setting and a special event. Not sure if they are just trying to scrape every dime before closing the doors but this was a terrible experience. Side note- this was a pretty good place to watch the fireworks, the hotels blocked the lower ones but you had a good view of the majority.

We booked the rooftop special for the fireworks and paid up front for the experience. The restaurant only had one server for the entire rooftop of 50+ people, so of course service was awful. Waited 35 minutes for our first drink, didn’t get other drinks we ordered, half of the table received dessert while the other half didn’t and had to wait another 20 minutes, etc. We felt terrible for the lone server, but it really tarnished the experience and gave me a bad impression of Mertens. I would not consider booking there again.

The food and service here are always top shelf. The drinks are some of the most unique in Grand Rapids, especially for gin fans. You also can't go wrong with a poutine starter.

The view is great Our server was very good Food and drinks were good In the email confirmation we received before going, it told us where to park for 2 hours free parking. When we asked for this, we were told they were “all out of it”. That was very disappointing, but other than that, it was a good experience
